Digital Journalism Trainer - Islamabad, Pakistan

CLOSING DATE: 5 October 2012 Description BACKGROUND: In Pakistan, Internews is implementing a project to expand and modernize teaching capacity in the journalism programs at four Universities (Peshawar, Kohat, Hazara and Gomal). Previously, this has involved the creation of Broadcast Academies (computer labs and radio production equipment) at each institution. This year, Internews is substantially increasing its involvement in improving the ability of its partner Universities to provide modern instruction in both TV and Digital (Online) Journalism. For Digital Journalism, this will involve the creation of websites for each University to be used as campus news sites and platforms for teaching Digital Journalism, as well as the provision of “train the trainer” training for selected faculty from each University to ensure they have the knowledge and technical teaching skills required to instruct students in Basic Digital Journalism. Internews staff will provide participating faculty with basic introductory training in website creation, basic design and use, digital content gathering and uploading. GENERAL FUNCTION: Internews is currently seeking a consultant to fill the role of Digital Journalism Trainer to provide two two-week training courses in Islamabad, Pakistan. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Resident Journalism Advisor and management of the Chief of Party. Following the delivery of basic introductory training by Internews staff, the consultation will be responsible for designing and delivering two additional two-week TOT courses to University faculty between now and March 31st, 2013. The goal of the training is to equip faculty members with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach basic digital journalism. In addition to providing training, the consultant will work with Internews staff to establish skills criteria and evaluate the faculty in order to determine the degree to which they are qualified to teach the subject to students. The first course should focus on the editorial development and placement of online content (photos, text, audio and video). The second course should focus on teaching techniques to ensure participating faculty are able to teach basic online journalism in an interactive and demonstrative manner. SCOPE OF WORK: • Develop for the approval of Internews’ Resident Journalism Advisor a list of essential knowledge and skills participating faculty must possess to be able to teach students courses in Basic Digital Journalism. • Design and provide an outline of two two-week training courses aimed at providing participating faculty with the skills required to teach Basic Digital Journalism • Ensure the design of the training incorporates the use of text, photos, audio and video in the development of multimedia news content for online platforms. • Ensure the training also requires participating faculty to develop teaching modules related to the instruction of Digital Journalism. • Work with the Resident Journalism Advisor and Internews Monitoring and Evaluation staff to develop the tools required to effectively evaluate the Digital Journalism teaching skills of participating faculty as the training courses progress • Deliver two two-week training courses on dates agreed upon between now and March 31st, 2013. • Provide the Resident Journalism Advisor with written detailed course outlines prior to the commencement of each training course • At the conclusion of the first training course, provide written evaluations of the skills to date of each participant in accordance with the established criteria, including a synopsis of the material covered in each training day • Modify subsequent training plans as required to correct skill deficiencies identified by the evaluation process. • Recommend to the Resident Journalism Advisor and Internews New Media and IT staff additional on-site mentoring and training assistance that could be provided to faculty between TOT courses • At the conclusion of the second training course, provide a detailed final report assessing the individual training capabilities of each participant against the established evaluation criteria. Include recommendations on any residual or future faculty training needs, a separate after-action assessment of the practicality of determining criteria for qualified instructors, the efficacy of training, and the success of the evaluation process. Include “lessons learned” from the training process overall • As requested and to a limited extent, provide faculty with advice on the design of their own basic digital journalism courses • Contribute course outlines and teaching materials to Internews Pakistan Digital Library for future use to reinforce training issues with participating faculty. QUALIFICATIONS: • Demonstrated background working in and teaching Digital and Online Journalism • Previous “Train the Trainer” Experience • Experience training in a developing media environment • Experience teaching or training in an academic environment preferred • Experience working in a developing country desired • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics • Excellent organizational skills and ability to deliver program objectives in a timely manner • English fluent and a foreign language, particularly Urdu, a plus. CONDITIONS: • Consultancy involving 2 x trips to Pakistan • No travel outside of Islamabad required • Starting date – First two week course is set to take place November 26th to December 6th. The second course is scheduled to be delivered in February 2013.
