World Affairs Council Vice President for Programs

The World Affairs Council is actively recruiting to fill the position of Vice President of Programs. This is a newly created position resulting from the implementation of a newly developed Strategic Plan. Summary

The Vice President of Programs plays a key leadership role within the World Affairs Council and our community as it relates to international affairs. In collaboration with the President, this position oversees all program development and implementation for the World Affairs Council. It leads program staff across the three main programs of the Council (Community Programs (CP), International Visitor Program (IVP), and Global Classroom (GC)) to both develop events and implement an integrated program strategy that achieves the Council’s vision of a greater Seattle community that is connected, engaged, and inspired to create change in the world. Reporting to the President/CEO, this is a full-time exempt position. The Vice President of Programs supervises 4 staff members and is supported by a Program Committee, which includes members of the Board of Trustees, and numerous interns and volunteers.

The World Affairs Council’s strategic goals, to be achieved through the work of the Vice President of Programs in collaboration with others, are:

  • Strengthen, diversify, and grow the World Affairs Council community.
  • Expand cross-programmatic partnerships and collaborations internally and externally.
  • Increase opportunities to connect knowledge with deliberation and engagement through programs that emphasize participation and expand access to local organizations working internationally.
  • Leverage technology to reach new audiences.
  • Diversify and broaden funding sources.

Responsibilities

Manage overall program strategy that strengthens, diversifies, and grows the Council community. (15%)

  • Set and articulate vision for Council programs within the community, in line with the strategic plan.
  • Implement quality programs that grow the Council membership. (Note –IVP, GC, CP are programs. New programs could be developed).
  • Oversee evaluation of programs to measure impact of programs on mission.

Increase opportunities to connect knowledge with deliberation and engagement through events and programs that emphasize participation and expand access to local organizations working internationally. (25%)

  • Develop and oversee implementation of quality events and series on cutting edge issues. (Note - currently, we refer to an event as a single occasion, a series as a group of events tied together thematically)
  • Develop and oversee implementation of a schedule of diverse events, including events organized by all three programs (CP, IVP, and GC), YPIN events, Fellows monthly meetings, and quarterly community receptions.
  • Work with staff to manage the details of event development, including program leads, invitations, venues, partners, speakers, and event logistics.
  • Oversee the development of marketing materials and other proposals for overall quality, creativity, and accuracy

Manage 7 person program staff, including 4 direct reports. (15%)

  • Oversee hiring, training, and management of staff (employees and interns)
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and support professional development opportunities for program staff.
  • Encourage collaboration, support, and professional development amongst team members.
  • Engage volunteers in program implementation as appropriate.

Manage, diversify, and grow funding related to programs. (15%)

  • Actively support all of the fundraising work of the Council.
  • Actively participate as a member of the fundraising team.
  • Develop funding partnerships around Council programs, i.e. program sponsors and partners.
  • Oversee financial planning related to programs, including the development and management of event budgets and annual budgets.
  • Manage grants and grant reporting. Support the writing of new proposals as opportunities arise.
  • Oversee the development of evaluation systems for measuring the overall impact and quality of programs.
  • Oversee financial administration of programs, including invoices, receivables, and monthly credit card charges.

Expand and deepen partnerships and collaborations externally and within program staff. (10%)

  • Provide leadership at the board level and within the community, bringing key partnerships together around knowledge about critical world issues and opportunities for our community to engage in them.
  • Seek out and delivers on projects strategic to the Council and key local community partners.

Manage Council communication functions related to programs, including media relations, social media, and video/audio recording partnerships. (10%)

  • Within the parameters of an organizational communication strategy, oversee and implement an appropriate communication effort for each event.

Perform as a key member of the Council’s senior management team. (10%)

  • Participate in the Council’s senior management team.
  • Provide leadership and continuity in CEO’s absence.
  • Inform and support the board in program related activities, including board committees

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 8+ years relevant work experience leading strategic initiatives within diverse communities
  • 3+ years working with community, corporate, and diplomatic leaders in this region
  • 2+ years managing events of 100+ people
  • 3+ years managing staff of at least 3 within a non-profit setting
  • 3+ years managing budgets of $100,000+ within a non-profit environment
  • Significant experience using current technology, social media, and web-based communication in a professional setting
  • International living experience (work or study)
  • International work or international issues work, preferred
  • Organizational strategic planning experience, preferred

Qualities:

  • Well read in international issues and foreign policy, with an ability to articulate issues and frame discussions for our community
  • High attention to detail and multi-tasking ability
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organized and effective under deadline
  • Ability to work early mornings and evenings as required
  • Outgoing personality, with strong networking and public speaking skills

Education:

  • Bachelors degree, required
  • Masters degree, preferred
  • International studies, preferred

Compensation

The World Affairs Council offers a competitive salary with a salary in low to mid $60,000 range with a total pay package that includes generous Paid Time Off; health, dental, vision, transportation, Short and Long Term Disability benefits and the opportunity to participate in a 403 B program. Compensation towards a smart phone is included in base compensation.

In order to effectively and efficiently manage the inevitable last minute program changes, this position requires full time access to work email through a smart phone. The Vice President of Programs will be required to participate regularly in events that take place in the early morning and evening and must be available to attend or lead events at these times. Occasional use of a personal vehicle is part of the job.
