La Posición: La posición pertenece al programa de Genetics and Biotechnology, La posición estará ubicada en la sede Principal del CIP localizada en Lima,Peru

Deberes y Responsabilidades:

Es responsable de apoyar en la planificación de los experimentos, para lo cual:

a) Coordina la procedencia del material a utilizar.

b) Desarrolla los criterios propios para la instalación de los experimentos.

c) Establece cronogramas de ejecución.

d) Coordina la elección de los ambientes adecuados para la instalación de los experimentos.

Es responsable de apoyar en la instalación y evaluación de los experimentos, para lo cual:

a) Instala los experimentos en laboratorios, invernaderos y campos.

b) Evalúa los experimentos.

c) Digitaliza los datos generados en las evaluaciones.

Es responsable de apoyar en el análisis de los resultados, para lo cual:

a) Procesa la información digitalizada.

b) Procede con los análisis estadísticos adecuados.

c) Elabora las tablas resúmenes de los resultados.

Es responsable de apoyar en la preparación de informes, para lo cual:

a) Redacta informes pertinentes a los trabajos realizados.

b) Presenta los informes al supervisor directo para las correcciones pertinentes.

Es responsable de apoyar en la preparación de presentaciones, para lo cual:

a) Apoya al supervisor directo en la preparación.

b) Prepara las presentaciones.

Criterio de Selección:

  • Estudios técnicos en Biología, Agricultura o afines
  • Experiencia mínima de 2 años en posiciones similares ( cultivo de tejidos vegetales, regeneración de semillas de camote silvestre,
  • Conocimiento del Idioma Inglés (deseable)
  • Conocimiento y uso de Herramientas Office a nivel intermedio ( Word, Excel, etc)
  • Habilidad de comunicación e interrelación interpersonal.
  • Habilidad para mantener información y archivos de manera ordenada y clasificada

International Potato Center Junior Research Assistant

The position: The Junior Research Assistant position will be based at ABL / CIP in Lima, Peru and will report to the leader of the project based at the same location. His/her main function is to implement the research plan involving mainly molecular and cellular techniques as well as greenhouse experiments.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Review and stay abreast with literature on plant genome sequencing
  • Develop genetic materials: segregating populations and haploid tissue
  • Profile with SSR markers selected genotypes
  • Propagate plant material in vitro and in greenhouse
  • Prepare scientific reports and publications

Selection Criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Molecular Biology or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience required in similar position.
  • Experience and strong skills in basic molecular biology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team work skills.

The Position: This position will be based in Lima, Perú and reports directly to the coordinator of the biosystematics thematic area within the Global Program Genetic Resources.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Execute laboratory (80%) and field research (20%) related to diversity assessment, genotyping and phenotypoing, trait evolution and phylogeny of cultivated and wild genetic resources.
  • Coordinate the outsourcing of genotyping to external service providers of next generation marker systems.
  • Manage, update and reference genetic resources databases with core / composite genotype / working collection data.
  • Actively participate in data management and statistical analysis for (dis)similarity, molecular variance, population and phylogenetic structure.

Selection Criteria:

  • Master degree in biology, genetics or taxonomy.
  • Experienced in laboratory work using molecular markers for genetic diversity assessment.
  • Specialization in genetic resources analysis and experienced in the use of disciplinary statistical for (dis)similarity, molecular variance, population and phylogeny analysis.

The researcher will contribute to elucidating the genetic diversity of potato, sweetpotato, and selected Andean root and tuber crops, identifying leads that are essential for understanding the diversity maintained within the CIP genebank, as well as in-situ where evolution is an ongoing process. The successful candidate will also contribute to understanding of the distribution patterns, domestication and evolution of genetic resources (GR) across landscapes to facilitate classification in support of conservation strategies and target exploration of genetic diversity for use in agriculture.

The position will contribute to and draw on the experience of a multi-disciplinary research team focusing on genetic resources (GR) research within four thematic areas: (i) GR evaluation, (ii) in-situ conservation, (iii) GR technologies and methods, (iv) biosystematics.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Elucidate the biosystematics and evolutionary origin of potato, sweetpotato and ARTC genetic diversity.
  • Conduct targeted research on crop and trait co-evolution as well as adaptation (population dynamics).
  • Support the evaluation of genetic diversity with molecular tools and conduct targeted research on crop and trait evolution.
  • Supervise research on discovery and characterization of cultivated as well as wild genetic resources.
  • Work in team with the curators, GR scientists and breeders to advance the knowledge of genetic diversity, population structure and traits towards efficient use.
  • Help test and develop molecular markers for diversity assessment and taxonomic as well as evolutionary experiments.
  • Define and develop molecular assays to complement phenotypic assessments.
  • Attract research funds through grant writing and publish in scientific journals.
  • Coordinate research across programs and units, including with CIP breeders and curators, as well as with a wide array of partners and stakeholders (national programs, universities).

Selection Criteria:

  • PhD degree in phylogenetics, biosystematics or similar field with extensive post-doc experience (minimum 5 years).
  • Excellent working knowledge of molecular genetics, next generation marker systems, and genomic approaches.
  • Experience with statistical methods and tools for diversity and phylogenetic research.
  • Strong understanding of the current state of knowledge of evolutionary genetics.
  • Capable of developing and applying innovative concepts in crop genetic diversity assessment and evolutionary studies.

Project Information
The HIV project (SMART) supports the up-scaling of HIV/AIDS services through task-shifting and decentralization in the catchment areas of Thaba Tseka and Butha Buthe Districts (each catchment area includes one hospital and surrounding health centres). SMART aims at establishing good quality decentralized ART and the integration of ART/TB care into routine services.
The primary healthcare project (PHC) started in 2011 as a pilot project in Butha Buthe and Thaba Tseka Districts with a focus on village health worker support, community empowerment and strengthening the links between the formal health system and communities. PHC supports the national strategy to reinforce primary health care by strengthening different levels of the formal and informal health care system. Due to Lesotho’s disease burden, the focus is on TB, HIV and maternal and child health.
As of 2014, the two projects will be merged. At the same time, the collaboration with the district health management teams will be strengthened.
Both projects are embedded into the SolidarMed country programme, which aims at contributing to improved health services in the programme area through the joint efforts of all projects.
For each catchment area (Butha Bute and Thaba Tseka), SolidarMed recruits one HIV/PHC project manager (two identical positions open).

Tasks
· Manage and steer the SMART/PHC projects in the respective catchment areas
