Position Summary
Manage the development and support the implementation of Environmental Standard, related standards and guidelines and environmental engineering practices in general within the assets, under the direction of Group Head of Environment.

Additional responsibility as Group Technical Authority (GTA) for all elements of water management. Includes develop functional excellence in water management, identify potential risks to the business from water management issues (short, medium and long term), develop strategies, give expert advice and guidance on design and operations issues to mitigate the risks, and oversight and assurance of asset Water Management Plans. Communicate potential implications to BG leadership teams.

As GTA, review and make recommendations for approval, modification, or rejection of Dispensation Requests against BG Group Environmental Standards for water management.
Key Accountabilities
  • Support the continuous improvement in environmental performance of BG Group via direct support to assets, BG Advance and Executive.
  • Promote best practice across BG Group in energy efficiency, Greenhouse Gas emissions, air quality and Best Available Techniques (BAT) for Environmental Protection. The role covers auditing compliance and recommending or otherwise the granting of dispensations, where appropriate.
  • Group Technical Authority for Water Management. Includes further development and promotion of Group water management strategy to enable BG Group to achieve 'Excellence in Water Management'.
  • Implement the requirements of BG Group's water management strategy in conjunction with other BG Advance functions such as Developments, Production Operations, Engineering, Technology and Capital Projects.
  • Monitor the global response to water management issues, assess impact and implications for BG Group's management approach.
  • Ensure appropriate balance across the business between traditional oil field water management and sustainability water management issues.
  • Make authoritative recommendations for changing and developing Group Environmental Standards, guidance and tools which support the Group water management strategy.
  • Develop, maintain and promote tools to support BG Group Environmental Business Principles.
  • Provide expert Environmental advice and consultancy for Assets and Regions with respect to water management. Environmental requirements and compliance with environmental regulations and laws (local and international).
  • Conduct management audits and reviews of Standards implementation.
  • Provide support to project Peer Assists, Functional and Readiness Reviews.
  • Manage relevant specific Water and Environmental Management technology projects.

Unique Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Attribute
Experience required:
  • Experience of working on environment and water related issues and demonstrable technical expertise in environment and water management.
  • Experienced practitioner in various environmental management assessment techniques (ENVID, EIA, BAT assessment, environmental management systems and auditing).
  • Operational experience in the identification and selection of typical environmentally related critical equipment.
  • Proven track record in carrying out and delivering environmental management duties such as environmental impact assessment and environmental engineering option identification and assessment.
  • Experience in working across different departments as well as with external organisations and service companies.
  • Demonstrable experience of and credibility in portfolio and project management to ensure on-target delivery of the programme and individual projects.
Knowledge, skills and attributes required:
  • Good working knowledge of oil and gas sector and current and potential future environment and water management issues. Practical asset experience beneficial.
  • Relevant degree level education (environmental science, physical geography, engineering) required.
  • Further degree or professional qualification in environmental management would be beneficial.
  • Professionally recognised expertise in specialist skill area relevant to the business.
  • Technical expertise to understand water related inputs of a broad range of disciplines.
  • Appropriate professional qualification such as IEMA lead auditor, IEMA or Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Scientist would be beneficial.
  • Proven record of influencing skills at all levels.
  • Ability to work autonomously within field.
  • Ability to integrate conflicting technical and political issues to recommend practical solutions and guidance.
  • Ability to assimilate information quickly, remote from information sources.
  • Ability to promote environmental good practices in the face of resistance and competing goals.
  • Must be able to work under a minimum of supervision, with the ability to interpret issues and decide how and with whom to escalate as necessary.
