Science and Policy Research Internship

Therefore we must ensure that all of our external communications – from fundraising appeals to facebook posts - have consistent messaging whilst being effective, relevant and impactful.

Science and Policy Research Internship
Start Date: October 2013
Internship Length: 3 months initially, with the possibility to be extended for a further 3 months.
Location: Woking, GU21 4LL
This is an unpaid internship, only reasonable, allowable expenses will be reimbursed.
Interviews: Will be held on 04 September 2013.


The intern will be involved in researching relevant, impactful facts and evidence from scientific reports, journals and other similar publications that are suitable for use in fundraising and communications material. They will liaise with Programmes Managers to gain agreement of those facts and upload them onto the Factbank (on our intranet site). Other research will contribute to the development of specific policy position statements, Q&A and other outputs as required. 

• Further develop and update the factbank - a central store of agreed facts and figures for use by the organisation. It will be a key resource for finding messages for fundraising and communications material, as well as for media interviews.
• Undertake time bound research for specific policy position statements and/or Q&A in development.
• Provide short-term basic research to support other pieces of work as needed. 

WHAT SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ARE REQUIRED?

Essential
• Educational background in conservation or environmental science
• Proven experience in conducting desk-based research, analysing evidence and presenting it in a concise form
• Proven experience of handling information, information storage, referencing and retrieval
• Knowledge of fundraising techniques and what information triggers giving from different audiences
• Attention to detail and a meticulous approach to work
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proactive problem solver
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt style appropriately and develop effective working relationships
• A good command of the English language
• Demonstrates initiative and can manage own workload

Desirable
• Post-graduate level in an environmental science subject
• Experience of working within an environmental/conservation organisation
• Experience using a ‘Wiki’
• A good understanding of WWF’s mission and goals so that information accurately matches the needs of the organisation
