Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Web Administrator to work in support of the organization’s digital operations. This position reports to the Digital Director.
Responsibilities:
1. Support the design, implementation and deployment of web infrastructure and features that are cost effective and sustainable;
2. Provide technical advice and support for online-based projects; assist in the roll-out of major projects;
3. Provide support and solutions across the organization for all issues connected with daily operation of the site;
4. Provide support and manage the integration of new platforms and tools on the site;
5. Contribute to the digital team’s efforts to innovate and evolve, including strategy, expand our mobile presence and stay on top of mobile trends, inspire the organization with new features and tools that might help further our goals; and
6. Carry out any other tasks as required, including managing vendors and supporting security efforts.
Qualifications:
Education:  Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.  An advanced degree is preferred.
Experience:  Minimum three years of progressively advancing web development and infrastructure support experience, with an emphasis in LAMP platforms. Experience working with vendors a plus, as is an understanding of web technology and its application in a human rights setting.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Drupal  (6 or 7) experience is required. Experience developing, troubleshooting and modifying Drupal custom modules is an advantage.
2. Experience in administration and management of LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Including configuration, security, support & trouble-shooting  and disaster recovery.
3. Detailed knowledge of Content Delivery technologies, Varnish, Memcache, APC, Drupal, LAMP, and other relevant technologies.
4. Experience with caching methods using APC, Varnish, Pressflow and Memcache.
5. Experience working with Solr search engine an advantage.
6. Experience with source/version control systems (e.g., Git, Subversion, etc.).
7. Knowledge of web standards, responsive design across browsers, and online communications best practices.
8. Experience with UNIX system administration and web server configuration.
9. Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities, risk management, and consumer privacy.
10. Experience in SEO optimization a plus.
11. Strong interest in online journalism and/or human rights.
12. Ability to work in a demanding, diverse, and fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team is required. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW.
Salary and Benefits:  HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits.  HRW will pay reasonable relocation expenses, if required.
