Programme description

The Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP) offers an internship/traineeship program university students or fresh postgraduate students. The working experience is designed to allow interns/trainees to strengthen their knowledge and gain practical experience in the training and learning field, with a specialization in topics related to peacekeeping and peace operations.
PTP is a specialized programme of UNITAR intended to offer systematic and comprehensive preparation to civilian, military and police personnel eager to serve in peace operations. PTP presents an effective and innovative approach to training; PTP courses are designed and developed to respond to the evolving and complex training needs in peace operations.
The Learning Solutions team of the programme focuses on creating needs-based, creative and innovative learning solutions for our beneficiaries, ranging from mid-career professionals pursuing a master degree online, military troops preparing for their deployment to UN peace operations or young changemakers wishing to build sustainable peace in their communities.

The internship / traineeship

UNITAR PTP is now accepting applications from qualified applicants interested in working for a minimum of three months on a full-time unpaid basis at UNITAR headquarters in Geneva.
Under the supervision of the manager of the Peacekeeping Training Programme, the intern/trainee will assist in the day to day work of the Learning Solutions team focusing on researching and designing innovative learning experiences both online and face-to-face.
Individual work plans will be designed in accordance with specific terms of reference, which also highlight learning objectives as the internship/traineeship is intended to allow trainees/interns to develop specific skills and competences.

Specific working areas will include

  • Conducting research and drafting of summary reports on various training and problems solving methods, such as but not limited to human centered design, transformative learning, mobile learning or gamification.
  • Testing and piloting new ideas and methods internally.
  • Support team in the design of learning events, including selection of methods, drafting agendas, compiling learning material and devising assessment strategies.
  • Support team in the preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of training activities.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a solid background in one of the following fields:
  • Education/ Training/ /Learning and Technology;
  • Humanities/ Communications;
and have a strong interest in innovation for learning and training.

Skills required

Although the internship/traineeship will be a continuous learning process, the applicant should possess at least a basic understanding of learning processes, training and online learning, have good organizational skills. The applicant should be a self-starter, out-of the box thinker who thrives on solving challenges and has a solution-oriented attitude. Outstanding communication skills (both written and oral) are essential, in order to be able to work with various stakeholders from different cultural and professional backgrounds.
Readiness for continuous learning, including learning new IT tools and software is desirable. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, knowledge of using learning management systems (e.g. Moodle), social media and other web tools is a plus. Other qualities, such as good organization skills, initiative, dedication and independence at work are welcome.

Languages

Proficiency in English is essential; proficiency in French, Spanish or another UN language will be considered an asset.

Status

Interns/trainees are considered gratis personnel. They are not financially remunerated by UNITAR. They are not staff members and shall not represent the Institute in any official capacity.
