SANDVIK Hyperion in Barcelona, Spain is looking for
R&D Engineer - Material Scientist
Sandvik Hyperion is a global, full-line provider of innovative cemented carbide, diamond and cubic boron nitride solutions. We enable our customers to improve business performance with effective and wear-resistant tools, applications and components in hard and super-hard materials.
During 2017, Sandvik Hyperion will establish a new Carbide Research & Development Centre in Barcelona, Spain. This R&D Centre will include a new laboratory building with state-of-the-art equipment and aims to employ researchers focused on developing next generation materials, products and process technologies to support the business. It will serve as the core technology enabler, supporting a decentralised product development activity already operating in the production units.
Working at Sandvik Hyperion in Barcelona will give you the chance to work with product development and materials processing using advanced equipment and technology. You will develop good contacts with our production units strategically positioned around the globe and also with research institutes and universities.
The Role
The role will involve:
  • Analysing material properties with respect to microstructure, crystallography, material chemistry and processing route.
  • Exploring novel concepts, approaches or insights for advanced, high-performance composite materials and seeking an effective route to their commercialization.
  • Development of novel grades of cemented carbide in support of our diverse range of applications.
  • Working in an international team and collaborating with universities and other external research centres.
  • Ensuring ‘Fair play’ and Health-Safety-Environmental procedures are followed.
Your Profile
The successful candidate will:
  • Possess an MSc, preferably a PhD, in a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Have at least three years of relevant experience of materials science, crystallography or metallurgy, preferably powder metallurgy, and especially cemented carbides.
  • Have knowledge of microscopy and electron microscopy as well as analytical techniques such as EBSD, XRD etc.
  • Possess good inter-personal and communication skills with experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Have a good command of oral and written English.
The following would be advantageous:
  • An understanding and interest in powder processing and characterization, preferably in powder metallurgy, especially cemented carbides.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic modelling and simulation of materials and material performance.
  • Have the ability to travel occasionally.
