R&D Engineer - Process Development (Pressing & Consolidation)
Sandvik Hyperion is a global, full-line provider of innovative cemented carbide, diamond and cubic boron nitride solutions. We enable our customers to improve business performance with effective and wear-resistant tools, applications and components in hard and super-hard materials.
During 2017, Sandvik Hyperion will establish a new Carbide Research & Development Centre in Barcelona, Spain. This R&D Centre will include a new laboratory building with state-of-the-art equipment and aims to employ researchers focused on developing next generation materials, products and process technologies to support the business. It will serve as the core technology enabler, supporting a decentralised product development activity already operating in the production units.
Working at Sandvik Hyperion in Barcelona will give you the chance to work with product development and materials processing using advanced equipment and technology. You will develop good contacts with our production units strategically positioned around the globe and also with research institutes and universities.
The Role
The role will involve:
- Being "process driver/owner" for cemented carbide pressing and compaction within Hyperion in this key technology area.
- Standardizing, rationalizing and instilling best practices in our current production technologies across production units globally.
- Driving efficiency and collaborative projects in compaction as well as supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensuring pressing knowledge transfer across the organization and identification of major risks, technology shifts, capability lacks and succession gaps.
- Identification of preferred pressing equipment suppliers and machinery and review this from a company perspective.
- Acting as the first contact for Hyperion pressing engineers globally when seeking production support.
- Producing new ideas, approaches or insights and seeking opportunities for organisational/process improvement as well as leading projects to bring these to fruition.
- Building, leading and working in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams and liaising directly with production units, suppliers and customers on technical issues.
- Collaborating with universities and other external research centres.
- Ensuring ‘Fair play’ and Health-Safety-Environmental procedures are followed.
Your Profile
The successful candidate will:
- Possess an MSc, preferably a PhD, in a relevant Engineering discipline.
- Possess at least five years of industrial experience of powder pressing, compaction and consolidation methods including uni-axial, isostatic and multi-axial pressing techniques, especially cemented carbides.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the physical processes undergone by powders during the compaction process.
- Have the ability to design and improve production pressing process cycles.
- Have an understanding of presses and their capabilities.
- Possess good inter-personal and communication skills with experience of leading multidisciplinary teams.
- Have a good command of oral and written English.
The following would be advantageous:
- Have relevant experience of materials science, metallurgy and/or powder processing and characterization, preferably in powder metallurgy, especially cemented carbides
- Have the ability to travel as needed.
