JOB TITLE: Mechanic
PROJECT: Multiple; 6 months contract (renewable)
DUTY STATION: Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal
REPORTING TO: Transport Officer
STARTING DATE: Mid of February 2011



The Norwegian Refugee Council is an independent humanitarian organization. Our task is to improve international protection of refugees and internally displaced persons, and to offer humanitarian assistance regardless of race, nationality or political views. Our efforts are founded on the principle that all human beings are entitled to a life in peace, liberty, safety and equality, as this is expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. NRC has been working in Sudan since 2004, our current programmes include Education, Shelter, Food security and ICLA.

Task and responsibilities as a Mechanic, as requested by Transport Officer:
• Assist the Logistics Department with fleet management
• Fuelling of vehicles
• Assist the Transport Officer with car pool report and fuel reports
• Assist in recruitment of drivers
• Perform mechanical work on NRC for all vehicles (cars and motorbikes)
• Perform other mechanical/technical/electrical work on NRC equipments
• Assist in obtaining registration and insurance documents for NRC vehicles

Tasks and responsibilities as Mechanic:
• Responsible for the curative and preventive maintenance of all NRC vehicles. All maintenance must be carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, according to Drivers Manual, or as needed and in agreement with the Transport Officer.
• Ensure that all tools are available and in working order in all vehicles. Report promptly and in writing to Transport Officer if some tools are missing.
• Perform minor repairs and arrange for major repairs and servicing of all NRC vehicles.
• Ensure that tow rope, jack and other necessary equipment are always in all vehicles and that the winch is working.
• Ensure that the radio communication in the vehicles are working.
• Be flexible and help out when other NRC staffs has heavy workload.

General rules for operating NRC vehicles:
• The vehicles are used only with the authorization of the NRC Management
• The vehicles must always be driven in a safe manner and observe speed limits set by NRC.
• Seat belts must be used at all times.
• Only passengers authorized by the Area Manager/Project Manager are allowed in the NRC vehicles
• No firearms or uniformed persons are allowed in or on the NRC vehicles

Daily reporting
• Meet with Transport Officer every morning about the duties of the day.
• Inform the Transport Officer immediately of any change of plans.
• No work for other organizations or non-NRC staff can be done during working hours.
• Any other duties, responsibilities and tasks relating to project and humanitarian work that may be assigned by the Transport Officer/Logistic Supervisor.
