Description:

The University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a Dean to the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. The faculty brings together disciplines represented by its seven Schools, namely, School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, the School of Construction Economics & Management, the School of Electrical & Information Engineering, the School of Mechanical, Industrial & Aeronautical Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering and the School of Chemical & Metallurgical Engineering.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding academic in a field within the engineering faculty and will have a proven ability in the following key performance areas:

  • Academic leadership
  • Strategic planning and administration
  • Human resource and financial management
  • Providing leadership in a complex environment

Additionally, the successful applicants should:

  • Have a strong research profile
  • Have an ongoing commitment to enhancing research productivity and to remain research active
  • Demonstrate scholarly credibility and legitimacy amongst his/her peers

The Dean will be a member of the University’s Senior Executive Team and will have, or will develop, a good understanding of:

  • The Faculty and how it relates to the University
  • South African higher education and its current imperatives
  • Education, training and development systems and strategies in a tertiary context
  • Market developments relating to graduate demand
  • Research promotion and demands
  • Professional developments and bodies relevant to the Faculty

The appointment is for a fixed period of five years. After that term, the Dean may apply for a further term of office. If unsuccessful, he/she may be offered an academic position elsewhere in the Faculty, in an appropriate department or school.

An attractive remuneration package is offered which is commensurate with the seniority of the position and includes generous leave, provident fund, medical aid, relocation allowance and remission of fees for dependents studying at Wits.

The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment in January 2012
