POSITION TITLE: Researcher, Guatemala

LOCATION: Guatemala

REPORTS TO: Senior Analyst, Guatemala

Role:

Based in Guatemala City, the successful candidate will help conduct research and interviews on security, conflict, local politics, governance, social and development issues. The researcher will also monitor the news, cultivate contacts within the government, media and civil society, create data bases, and help out with administrative tasks, such as travel arrangements and event preparation.

Responsibilities:

Conduct extensive research into prevailing security, political and social conditions in Guatemala; Help with advocacy and media work to disseminate research findings and recommendations; Work closely and liaise with representatives of governments and international and local organisations in gathering information, seeking input and feedback, and supporting the distribution of Crisis Group reports and recommendations. Assists with drafting and translation support for purposes of correspondence with local authorities and other interlocutors as necessary; Undertakes media reviews; Maintains contacts with local journalists; Responds to research requests from others in their project; Performs administrative tasks as needed.

Requirements:

Graduate studies in law preferred but candidates with experience in journalism, political science, sociology or international relations would also be considered; Knowledge and/or experience in Guatemala, Central America or Mexico; Fluent written and spoken Spanish and a good working knowledge of English; Preferred 1 – 3 years of professional experience; Computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and/or other statistical programs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation skills, and a very strong capacity for effective teamwork; Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
