Great Basin Gold is an international company, listed on the TSX, AMEX and JSE Exchanges, with mines currently being established in South Africa and North America. We are a dynamic young company,
focused on building a diversified asset base. The advertised positions are for the Burnstone Mine, situated 80km south of Johannesburg, close to the town of Balfour. Burnstone Mine will be built on
modern infrastructure to service mining activities, using specialised equipment and technology to enhance safe production over the life of the mine (which will exceed 19 years as part of Phase 1 of the project). Remuneration will be competitive and future increases will be performance based.

Safety Officer - Engineering

This role will see you perform the duties outlined in Section 2.19.1 of the MH&S Act, which will include conducting Health and Safety communication (eg prepare statistics and reports, attend safety meetings and update notice boards), as well as training. Conducting safety inspections and investigations into incidents/accidents will also be your responsibility, along with reporting thereon. You will assist Safety Representatives and Foremen with the planning and conducting of workplace inspections and planned task observations, as well as ensure that contractors on site comply with the MH&S Act as well as the mine’s Code of Practice and Health and Safety Management System. In addition, you will maintain and make suggestions to improve the Company’s Health and Safety Management System, as well as audit mining contractors’ health and safety systems (eg accountability files, inspection registers, etc) and take part in Health and Safety cross-audits at other company sites.

To be successful, you need a minimum of a Grade 12 Certificate with a Trade Test Certificate and COMSOC 1 and 2. 2-3 years’ experience as a Safety Officer or Foreman is a must, whilst a First Aid (Level 3) Certificate will be to your advantage.
