The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified PDF Production Economist who will be based at the AfricaRice Center (AfricaRice), Cotonou, Benin.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF)-Production Economist will be based at AfricaRice, Cotonou, Benin and operate under the direct supervision of the Program Leader, Policy, Innovation Systems and Impact Assessment Program.

AfricaRice is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment.
Responsibilities
The PDF-Production Economist will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team working to improve the productivity and competitiveness of rice-based production systems in sub-Saharan Africa. He/she is expected to:
o Conduct an impact assessment study on results obtained from the introduction of integrated crop management recommendations in sahelian irrigated systems (Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso);
o Support the conduct of economic analyses related to yield and productivity gap surveys conducted by national researchers in the framework of the Rice Agronomy Task Force through collaboration, networking, provision of technical assistance and training;
o Develop annual work plan and budget in consultation with the Program Leader, project coordinators and team members;
o Publish research results in refereed journals;
o Conduct any other duties as required by the needs of the Center.
Requirements:
o PhD degree or equivalent in Economics or Agricultural Economics;
o Long experience in rice-based systems analysis;
o Good knowledge of resource economics, institutional economics and experience in advanced quantitative analysis;
o Strong oral and written communication skills in French and/or English with a good working knowledge of the other language;
o Ability to work with other scientists and partners.

o The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility for renewal.
