We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work on a project which will investigate the infectious reservoir of malaria in Africa. The work involves laboratory infection of anopheles mosquitoes and the establishment of molecular techniques to assess levels of mosquito infection. The post is based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine but the postholder will be required to spend time at overseas laboratories in The Netherlands, Kenya and Burkina Faso.

The successful candidate will possess a University degree or HNC in biological sciences. They should be well organised with the ability to work independently.

Proven experience in carrying out experimental laboratory work including cell culture, problem-solving within a laboratory context and the ability to document results accurately is essential. The post also requires a person with excellent communication skills, willingness to work within a team and provide training to others as necessary. A high standard of IT skills are necessary. Experience with cultivation of P. falciparum parasites, particularly gametocytes and in the experimental infection of Anopheles mosquitoes with malaria parasites by membrane-feeding would be desirable. The postholder may be required to carry out some limited weekend work.

This full time post is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and is available from 1 April 2012 to the end of grant 31 October 2014. Salary is on the Academic Pathway Grade 5 scale at £31,065, per annum, inclusive.
