Advocacy and Communications Trainee Plan EU Office

Reporting to: Advocacy and Campaigns Manager
Responsible for:Supporting the implementation of the communications, campaigns and advocacy work plans
Based in: Brussels, Plan EU Office
Salary range: Unpaid, monthly allowance of +/- €200
Status: Full-time (5 days per week)

Overall purpose of the job

To support the communications, advocacy and campaign work of Plan EU Office by engaging the EU on advocacy issues and raising Plan’s profile, primarily through communication tools, EU media and events.

Principal Responsibilities


1. Assist the Advocacy and Campaign Manager and Communication and Media officer in the communication, campaign and advocacy work of the Plan EU Office;
2. Provide support for the organisation of meetings, seminars and other policy and media events;
3. Contribute to the implementation of the communication and advocacy strategies of the Plan EU Office.

General Description of Tasks

Under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Advocacy and Campaigns Manager to:

  • Support Plan Europe’s advocacy and communication work regarding Plan’s global campaign ‘Because I am a Girl’ (BIAAG);
  • Support the Advocacy and Campaigns Manager in the organisation of key events including EU Week of Action for Girls, the BIAAG campaign launch and a high-level Roundtable on girls and education in the European Parliament;
  • Provide support to the organisation of the Plan Europe Board meeting;
  • Contribute to the monthly external and internal newsletters of the Plan EU Office;
  • Write news stories and blogs and edit video for the Plan Europe website;
  • Contribute to the development of Plan Europe’s publications;
  • Assist in Plan’s EU press work;
  • Support the reach out of Plan Europe’s cross-Europe campaign game on girls and link to Plan National Offices;
  • Provide support for the organisation of meetings, seminars, hearings and other events conducted by Plan EU Office;
  • Represent Plan in external meetings in the EU institutions and NGO networks at the EU level;
  • Background research for one Plan EU position paper;
  • Support the advocacy work around the 2014-2020 EU budget;
  • Support the preparation of the High-level panel with youth at the EU DevDays.

Skill requirements

  • A university degree or equivalent experience in political science, international development, communication or any other specific field relevant to Plan’s work;
  • A good understanding of the functioning of the European Union and development policy;
  • A very good command of both written and spoken English;
  • A good knowledge of French is an advantage;
  • Additional European languages are considered an asset;
  • Have a valid working permit for Belgium;
  • Team spirit and willingness to work in a multicultural team;
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to work to a high standard, manage stress while prioritising multiple tasks and meeting deadlines;
  • Fully computer literate; skilled and confident user of office applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and calendar applications.
