AML/BSA Financial Intelligence Unit Director Huntington National Bank

The individual in this role will oversee the AML monitoring, analysis, investigations, Suspicious Activities Reporting (SAR), and Currency Transaction Reporting (CTR) functions. He/she will also provide corporate-level expertise and support to individual lines of business as well as the corporate risk functions on risk, trends, and activity concerning AML, Terrorist Financing and economic sanctions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of BSA/AML/CTF, PATRIOT Act, and OFAC requirements and remains vigilant to regulatory changes, stays abreast of industry trends, and can strategize operational enhancements.
  • Leads and develops financial intelligence team managers, analysts, and investigators to ensure complex and sensitive alerts and investigations involving money laundering and terrorist financing are effectively detected, investigated and reported to all appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provides specific information and assessment of exposure covering aspects such as: specific AML typologies, high profile cases and criminal behavior patterns discovered; identifying trends in Suspicious Activity Reports.
  • Deploys strategies to ensure teams have effective and innovative tools and techniques for detecting and reporting suspicious activities. Leads the ongoing strategy for monitoring coverage, prioritization and sequencing of transaction monitoring implementation projects.
  • Regularly communicates with Business Unit and compliance partners to establish, maintain and improve upon monitoring and methods to address and mitigate those risks both within the Business Unit and in the FIU; fosters a compliance culture.
  • Works with management in the development and enhancement of products to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; will supply knowledge and expertise of banking products and services and AML risk associated with each.
  • Provides financial intelligence analysis and reporting as well as status on compliance with regulatory requirements and ensures procedures comply with those requirements. Provides guidance and advice to the Chief BSA Officer regarding exposure to suspicious activities related to anti-money laundering and terrorist financing activity.
  • Possesses general planning and project management experience involving people, complex processes and technology issues and the control environment in which they operate; Experience with implementing and upgrading AML systems and data.
  • Demonstrates well-developed analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to analyze risk metrics and translate into prioritized action plans that anticipate and mitigate risk exposure.
  • Attends and contributes to regular and ad hoc AML/FIU network meetings.
  • Supports the Chief BSA Officer in oversight of programs, policies, standards and reporting on compliance with regulatory expectations.
  • Contributes to effective management reporting & dashboards for governance committees.
  • Maintains internal control standards and continuously improves management of compliance and operational risks within the unit.
  • Participates in special projects and initiatives as needed.

Desired Skills & Experience

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, criminal justice or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Ten or more years of experience working in AML, compliance, operational or audit function of a large commercial, investment bank, or in a regulatory agency, with working knowledge of consumer, commercial banking, and capital markets products.
  • Five or more years managing a team, preferably multiple teams of 10+

Additional Traits & Characteristics:

  • CAMs credential is preferred
  • Experience working in an FIU is preferred, with deep industry knowledge of AML-related regulations and industry best practices.
  • Preferably served in senior level AML compliance or investigations role(s) within a large complex banking organization
  • Law enforcement background is a plus
  • Excellent sense of detail and organizational skills with the ability to multitask and demonstrate flexibility
  • Proven ability to accomplish high-level objectives in the context of annual business and compliance plans
  • Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills; able to identify, escalate, investigate and resolve issues
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to correspond effectively with all levels
  • Capable of sharing knowledge, mentoring, and training other team members
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team
