Continental Director Latin America , SOS Children's Villages International

Background and Frame:
The current Continental Director for Latin America will retire in 2013. In order to enable a smooth handover and successful transition, we are now looking for a qualified successor, starting the assignment in the second half of 2012.

The SOS Continental Office for LAAM is located in Montevideo, Uruguay, which will also be the place of the assignment. The continent is separated into 2 regions, the Regional Offices are located in Costa Rica (San Jose) and Bolivia (La Paz).

SOS is actively engaged in programme work in 20 countries in LAAM.
The Continental Director is the most senior representative of the General Secretariat and SOS Children’s Villages International in the continent. The Secretariat consists of 65 co-workers in LAAM, and there are around 5800 co-workers employed in the National Associations that are in charge of the programming work.
The Continental Director reports directly to the Secretary General and heads the Continental Management Team. He/she is member of the global Senior Management Team of the organisation.


Mission:
The mission of the Continental Director is the accountable leadership and management of the continent, supported by the Continental Function Directors and Regional Directors.
This is accomplished through
• enabling and driving the roll out of the global strategy in the continent
• strong leadership of the continental management team according to the SOS principles and values
• contributing to the Senior Management Team by bringing in the continental perspective and taking a share of the international leadership responsibility.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Governance Development in the Associations of the Continent:
• Set the direction and support Regional Directors in building strong national associations through board development
• Develop monitoring and development strategies for National Associations and support Regional Directors in the implementation.
• Take strategic Finance and Operations Leadership in cooperation with the Continental Director of Operations.
• Support National Management Development and Organisational Development
• Actively support the Regional Director(s) and the Continental Function Directors in their management roles & responsibilities
• Fair and well thought-through performance management in alignment with target setting and development plans; have the right people in the right positions
• Efficient and effective set-up of the structure in the Continental Office and Regional Offices and meaningful task setting at the right level, guaranteeing flawless information-flow and avoiding double-work.
• Insist on evidence-based improvements in National Associations’

capacity building
Planning & budgeting:
• Lead zero-based budgeting process in the continent
• Integrate international functions targets into the continental targets and budget

Monitoring & Evaluation:
• Review the progress made in the regions in the course of the annual review cycle (3 reviews).
• Monitor the roll out of standards and policies through the Regional Directors according to the plan.
• Support the Regional Director in crisis interventions
Leadership of the Continental Office:
• Lead the Continental Office according to the principles of the matrix, benchmark best practices both inside and outside the organisation
• Our leadership style is Management by Objectives, participative, empowering through trust and delegation


Requirements:

• A positive track record of a senior leadership position in an international NGO
• Experience in dealing with volunteers (Boards) and governance structures
• Experience in working in the environment of a federation
• Responsible handling of big budgets
• General overview of state of the art fundraising tools
• A positive track record in people management and development
• Preferably Latin American National
• Excellent English skills
