The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with CDC Development Solutions and Management Systems International. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by developing and increasing the capacity of health professionals with tailored development opportunities. This is accomplished through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels, and performance management and professional development activities aimed to enhance the technical and leadership skills of fellows.

INTRODUCTION:

In December 2012, USAID will hold an Evidence Summit on the theme of Social and Behavior Change. The purpose of this Summit, which will bring together US Government, multilateral and nongovernmental partners, is to distill the most compelling evidence about the impact of social and behavioral change strategies, and to communicate that data for improved health and development decision-making. The Evidence Based Behavior Change Summit Intern (the Intern) will work for a six month period in Washington, DC on a variety of duties in supporting of this Summit.

The Summit preparation and implementation process will involve a variety of activities including online surveys; search for evidence on select priority issues; call for evidence; documentation and compilation of findings; expert meetings to assess evidence; pre-Summit and Summit meetings with different development partners; reporting and dissemination of initial findings though digital channels; and an evidence to action strategy, amongst other activities.

The Intern will work collaboratively with the Senior Advisor for Development Communication and Summit team members, including a Program Analyst and the Bureau’s Knowledge Management team, and will be overseen by the Director of the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

To become familiar with USAID and its partners and how evidence based research is gathered, analyzed and reported.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organize and manage the information flow stemming from different participants and venues (i.e., catalog responses from expert panels, store in a digital platform, update regularly and assist with appropriate dissemination to Summit participants). Update website and coordinate with contractor as necessary

• Document the evidence-based Summit process in a variety of media

• Work with team to document progress on the timeline of activities

• Assist contractors in integrating content, updating website platforms, and responding to requests from participants and stakeholders

• Assist in the coordination of the expert review teams (pre-Summit and Summit). Record suggestions and assessments stemming from each of the expert review teams, editing and posting the resolutions

• Assist presenters with their contributions and presentations

• Assist the Summit management team in knowledge management related activities that result from the process and, with management concurrence, document, draft, edit and distribute correspondence to the participants and stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Enrollment in a graduate program related to public health, international development, behavior change communication or related field with strong interest and some experience in knowledge management. Current upperclass undergraduates with strong research skills and experience will be considered. Individuals who have graduated within the last six months from a relevant graduate program will also be considered

• Knowledge of research methodologies and evidence search

• Experience compiling, editing and reporting on social development issues (preferably with an emphasis on behavior change and communication for development)

• Strong web-based research skills, and organizational and planning skills

• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

• Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

• Knowledge of French or Spanish a plus

• Proficient in editing and publishing scientific/research based information

• Knowledge of digital communication technologies, event planning and meeting planning

• Highly creative, independent, hands-on individual

• US Citizen required
