API Chaya formed in October 2011, when the Asian & Pacific Islander Women & Family Safety Center and Chaya for South Asian Women merged into one organization to better server Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other crimes in Washington state. We are located in Seattle, WA. We have a strong emphasis on mobilizing communities to find solutions to end violence; our community organizing includes communities such as LGBTQ, men, young people, faith-based communities, and various ethnic groups. The Crime Victim Specialist will, with the support of the Program Manager, provide advocacy, support and outreach to communities and survivors of general crimes, which include hate crimes, assault, survivors of homicide, human trafficking, child abuse & neglect, elder abuse & neglect, DUI crimes, kidnapping, burglary, and other crimes. The Specialist will be available during non-traditional work hours (weekends and evenings), have excellent people and organizing skills, and have an expressed interest and commitment to API Chaya’s mission.
DUTIES
• Utilize formal & informal networks (faith, business, and ethnic social) to outreach and increase the awareness and knowledge of resources for victims of general crimes
• Provide community education using culturally effective methods
• Assess needs of people who have been victimized and provide emotional support, advocacy and referrals to survivors and surviving family members of crimes
• Coordinate presentation events in the community
• Coordinate and assist in training volunteers
• Attend staff meetings and relevant trainings
• Maintain outreach records and assist in preparation of monthly program reports, grant reports, and other programmatic documents
• Participate in select public education and outreach activities
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of and a deep demonstrated commitment to working for women’s and/or survivor issues strongly preferred.
• Understand and appreciate Asian, South Asian, & Pacific Islander cultures; able to work with diverse communities (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age, transgender, class, immigrant, refugee, etc.)
• A minimum of 1 year experience working/volunteering in a diverse cultural setting
• A minimum of 1 year experience with community outreach and education or equivalent.
• Good public speaking skills and experience in planning and giving trainings
• Basic proficiency in using Internet, MS Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills
• Experience working effectively with people in crisis situations
• Able to multi-task, work in a flexible, evolving environment; willing and able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
• Preference will be for someone who is bilingual/bicultural in English and Asian, South Asian or Pacific Islander language and/or identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning
SALARY: Full Time Equivalent of this position includes approximately $30,000/year plus benefits (this is a PT position)
