The International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, with some 150 staff members on five continents, working though field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict worldwide. Widely recognised as the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments and intergovernmental bodies on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict, Crisis Group is seeking a highly capable Development Officer to join our team in either Brussels or London.

Role: This position is ideally suited for a candidate with grant writing experience and a strong background in international affairs. Reporting to the Director, Government & Foundation Relations, the successful incumbent will prepare funding proposals and reports for donors, assist with day-to-day grant management, and maintain relations with current and prospective government and foundation funders. This position is based in either Brussels or London and will be a fixed term appointment for one year to cover maternity leave starting 1 October 2012.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare concept notes, detailed funding proposals and interim and grant-end reports for submission to current government and foundation donors, with the guidance and supervision of the Director, Government & Foundation Relations.
• Gather detailed information from Crisis Group project and program directors on recent project outputs and future activities, for use in the writing of proposals and reports.
• Arrange meetings for Crisis Group program staff and senior staff with government and foundation donors.
• Manage grant contracts, including initial review, feedback to donors, and amendments.
• Assist the Director, Government & Foundation Relations, to establish and maintain close relationships with current and prospective donors, including the coordination of regular meetings.
• Participate in donor meetings as necessary, including periodic travel outside of Brussels.
• Conduct research on prospective foundation and government donors and working with the Director to develop a strategy for cultivation and solicitation;
• Assist with the conduct of internal evaluations of all Crisis Group projects, and in the compilation of evaluation results for both internal and external use.
• Coordinate the planning and execution of the annual Crisis Group Global Briefing in Brussels.

Requirements:

• Two to three years of professional experience, with preference given to those with grantwriting experience in an NGO or government environment.
• Excellent, demonstrated English language writing skills.
• Attention to detail, ability to work independently with tight deadlines, a well organised team player.
• Knowledge of French or other languages is highly desirable.
• Experience in planning events or conferences would be an asset.
• Non-EU nationals will require current and valid permission to work in the UK or Belgium.
