Harvard University Executive Director, Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies

The Executive Director works closely with the Faculty Director in providing strategic leadership and management for the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies which is dedicated to fostering research and study of European history, politics, culture, and society in any and all countries within Europe. The Executive Director may also occasionally contribute to the Center’s intellectual mission through teaching, writing, research, and student advising.
Duties and responsibilities:
• In close partnership with the Faculty Director, conceptualizes and develops new programs, strategies, and initiatives to advance the academic, research, and programmatic agenda of the Center.
• Takes a lead role in identifying funding sources for Center program initiatives, developing new and managing existing relationships with foundations and donors, and developing a strong program of stewardship activities. Writes grant proposals and reports and supervises the efforts of other Center staff in these endeavors.
• Coordinates and fosters linkages between programs concerned with Europe at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and other faculties at Harvard, and facilitates cross-regional research and cooperative efforts between regional centers and institutes.
• Manages the implementation of current and future Center programs including: graduate and undergraduate fellowship programs, a visiting scholars program, faculty research grants, sponsored research, publications, and a broad array of conferences, seminars, working groups, exhibits, and other special events.
• Regularly communicates and consults with colleagues in other Europe-related centers in the US and academic and research institutions in Europe.
• Maintains and builds relationships with European partner institutions and universities for the benefit of Harvard faculty and students and of the Center. Works with Harvard European alumni on programming for students on campus and in Europe, and creates campus based events for Club leaders and members.
• Oversees Center communications, including website content, annual reports, conference programs, correspondence, brochures, and other public - relations materials.
• Serves as chief administrator, responsible for the organization and day-to-day management of the Center’s activities. In consultation with the Faculty Director, and in conjunction with the Director of Administration and Finance, provides oversight of sponsored programs, human resources, and infrastructure, identifying and implementing program goals and priorities, allocating staff and resources, and aligning fundraising targets with the Center’s mission.
• Directly supervises Program staff and Director of Administration and Finance. Develops a diverse and effective team, plans and delegates work effectively, communicates and monitors performance expectations; motivates and develops direct reports, and ensures compliance with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures.
• Represents the Center with Faculty of Arts and Sciences administration.
• Participates in FAS and University-wide committees and initiatives as appropriate.
• Serves on the Center's Steering Committee, Advisory Committee, and the Standing Committee on European Studies. In consultation with the Faculty Director, develops agendas or discussion items and ensures implementation of action items generated by the committees.

Basic Qualifications:

A Master's degree in broadly defined European studies or related discipline is required. PhD or equivalent is preferred with a minimum of 8 year’s experience in academia and at least five years progressively responsible management experience, preferably in research or academic administration. Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, and federal and non-federal sponsored programs strongly preferred. Substantial writing experience, fundraising and grants management experience required. Exceptional oral and written communication skills required. Must have ability to represent the Faculty Director and the Center at all levels of the University and with external constituents, including donors, foundations, scholars, European policy makers, Harvard alumni and peer institutions. Familiarity with Harvard desirable. Ability to travel required.
The ideal candidate will possess working knowledge in at least one European language other than English and possess prior work or academic experience in a European country. She or he will have demonstrated success leading collaborative projects and achieving exceptional operational results, and will possess a strong reputation for being an organized and dynamic leader.
