(Ref: DDG-R4D/PDF/SFM/06/12)

Background: The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow - Soil Fertility Management.

IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa. We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100 internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa. Please visit http://www.iita.org/ for more information on IITA.

IITA is seeking to fill the position of Postdoctoral Fellow - Soil Fertility Management in the context of a project on ‘Achieving development impact and environmental sustainability through intensification of pro-poor cropping systems based on cassava, yams and legumes, operating in Nigeria, Benin, DR Congo, Rwanda, and Kenya, in the context of the Humidtropics CGIAR Research Program.

The proposed project will (i) conduct R4D in mixed, inter-cropping and rotational cassava, yam and grain legume cropping systems in order to improve crop productivity in addition to maintaining biological and ecological integrity of natural resources and (ii) support (a) processing of the above crops as part of value addition for increased household incomes, and (b) utilization of the crops from these production systems through establishment of market linkages. The project will be implemented in collaboration with national institutes, NGOs, private sector, extension services and farmers in the target countries and will help to strengthen their mutual capacity to conduct participatory research. The project will deliver the following outcomes: (i) documentation of dual purpose legumes, cassava and yam production and utilization in the targeted countries; (ii) increased awareness of targeted smallholders of possible socio-economic and nutritional benefits of these crops; (iii) create expertise in the target countries on the production and use of the above technologies and practices, (iv) effective and profitable value chains for the target crops, (v) an improved crop production environment. The overall benefit of the proposed research will be the adoption by farmers of higher yielding and more sustainable cropping systems.
