Principal I Geoscientist - Botswana
Rio Tinto is a global mining and metals group, dedicated to the smartest discovery, extraction and processing of the earth's natural resources.
Exploration and discovery have been the driving force behind our business for nearly 150 years. We are building a strong technical team in Botswana to undertake the safe prospecting and evaluation of the technical and economic viability of a potential iron ore development.
Initial prospecting activities will include geological mapping, drilling and resource modelling; complemented with community and environmental characterisation work.
An opportunity currently exists for a Principal I Geoscientist in a role based locally in Botswana. The role will have an emphasis on Iron Ore with the key elements being:
- Generation and delivery of a new project with Tier 1 potential to the region
- Identification of potential targets for acquisition
- Review and analysis of third party submittals
- Participation in collaborative research projects
- Contribution of specialist knowledge and expertise to the region thereby developing and enhancing the region's technical capability and knowledge base
- Provision of technical input to regional improvement initiatives
You will be accountable for specific items of work such as:
- Delivery of new business opportunities through target generation, recommendations of acquisition or tenement application.
- Providing advice to prioritise the regional portfolio with the aim of generating a tier one discovery.
- Implementing regional best practice for discipline/commodity by applying the technical standards and building regional capacity.
- Implementing new or refined technologies and techniques that facilitate discovery
- Maintaining a network of discipline specialists throughout industry, academia and external R&D providers.
- Provide leadership in HSEC.
To be considered for this role, you must have the following qualifications and competencies:
· Post Graduate qualifications in Geoscience or equivalent
· Substantial experience of which 2 years is within a specialist area, in a resource environment
· Experience of the exploration process
· Experience in the discipline/commodity
· Appropriate Exploration Competencies
· Appropriate HSEC Competencies
· Leadership training
