Radio Drama Technical Trainer, Sierra Leone

Contract duration: Various short-term contracts between October 2012 and October 2013

Background:

BBC Media Action is implementing an EU-funded project in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone in partnership with Eastern Radio and Njala University. It aims to improve the quality and quantity of cocoa being produced and exported through educational radio programming and the provision of formal and informal TVET opportunities to farmers and farm workers. Radio drama is seen as an educational, innovative and entertaining medium for providing targeted information to help communities build knowledge and skills.

Job purpose:

To support the Kenema production team to produce a drama of the highest broadcast quality. The trainer will take the lead in guiding/mentoring/training on all technical aspects of drama production including studio recording, editing and post production courses.

Main duties:
To identify skills and training needs of the production team and deliver tailor-made training to meet these needs
To work closely with the local radio technician to guide training on studio and audio equipment for a variety of recording situations
To work with programme editors and producers to ensure the sound they require is effectively captured and to offer technical assistance and advice in programme production, as well as generate ideas and to actively contribute to the editorial planning process to improve the quality and richness of sound recording.
To ensure that the production team is trained and equipped to continue producing the drama autonomously with clear plans, systems and production schedules in place
To assist the team to manage the sound studio and equipment in the studio, establishing the necessary systems in consultation with the administration team. Specifically, to take responsibility for ensuring technical equipment is in good working order at all times

Required knowledge, skills and experience:
Extensive sound production experience across a range of programme genres including discussion programmes, music and drama. Evidence of creativity is highly valued
Experience recording in a variety of settings and a clear understanding of how to use sound imaginatively and to dramatic effect
An ability to use digital multi-track editing software to the highest standard
Evidence of imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the widest possible audience appeal.
Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues.
Flexibility and an innovative approach to solving technical issues
Solid training background with a proven track record of designing and implementing long-term training/coaching sessions tailored to individuals and the context
A clear vision for the development of drama
Excellent leadership skills and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Proven talent management skills
A team player, highly collaborative, flexible and effective at negotiation
Resilience, able to work under pressure and to cope with the responsibilities associated with the role
Significant experience of planning training courses and training journalists essential
Previous experience of working and living in developing countries, preferably in Africa
