Rand Water is one of the largest water utilities in the world.

It provides bulk potable water of superior quality to 12 million people in the economic heartland of South Africa. Since its inception in 1903, Rand Water has built the proud history of never failing to supply a continually growing community. Johannesburg is one of few large cities not built on or near a sustainable river or dam, hence innovative solutions had to be engineered over the years to meet the challenge.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL OFFICER - ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION

The incumbent will provide proactive participation in ensuring the compliance monitoring of all environmental impacts and legislation related to the activities of construction sites, rehabilitation activities and waste management and the environment they impact on whilst liaising with interested and affected parties and Government departments.

Primary duties: • Drive, coordinate and implement all aspects of the Environmental Control Programme to ensure compliance on Rand Water construction projects • Manage search and rescue operations • Liaise and provide feedback to all relevant disciplines in terms of progress, risks compliance and delays experienced • Proactively assist in ensuring necessary environmental authorisations and permits are maintained and reviewed • Be responsible for in-field monitoring and verifying that the EMP is adhered to and taking action for non-compliance • Recommend the issuing of penalties for contraventions of the EMP (eg damage to “no go” areas) • Assist in corresponding with IAPs and relevant authorities • Project management administration • Keep all documents safe throughout the project lifecycle • Comply with the OHS Act and environmental legislative requirements • Assist with rehabilitation.

Requirements: • National Diploma in Environmental Management or BSc in Environmental Management or equivalent • Computer literate in MS Word and MS Excel • 2 years’ appropriate Environmental Control Officer experience and in-field experience with monitoring of construction type projects, search and rescue operations of fauna or flora, and EIA experience • Code EB (08) driver’s licence (must pass internal test) • Sound awareness of fauna and flora environmental aspects. Desirable: • Project management experience • Air quality and waste management • Demonstrate specialist knowledge/skills in fauna, flora, pedology or reinstatement.

Knowledge: • Sound knowledge of financial management, laws, nature, horticulture, environment reinstatement implementation, gabions and soils • Excellent knowledge of EIA’s processes and associated laws • Basic SAP experience. Skills: • Good people management, customer service • Sound finance management, administration and best practice • Excellent site assessments learn quickly and apply new ideas • Communication • Good report writing.
