Senior Technical Agriculture Advisor, West Africa

ACDI/VOCA is seeking an experienced, dynamic and innovative Senior Technical Agriculture Advisor for a regional trade competitiveness project focused in Western Africa. The project will work toward the advancement of the regional integration agenda, particularly work with the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS); improving trade facilitation in transit and customs; assisting with regional agricultural standards; working with regional competitiveness in staple crops; compliance with regional agricultural standards; increased use in financial products and services; increasing trade and competitiveness in select regional value chains (specifically, maize and livestock), reducing barriers to regional and international trade and increasing trade between the U.S. and Western Africa. In addition to demonstrating extensive knowledge of agriculture and value chain development, the successful candidate must possess advanced skills in complex project management and strategic planning.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the staple foods component and Feed the Future related activities of the project.
  • Identify and promote key market linkages within the staple foods sector in the region to improve trade, increase competitiveness and contribute to food security.
  • Promote market access and diversification by West African businesses.
  • Provide technical assistance to program beneficiaries to increase their market presence and improve service provision to their members, as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with program staff and senior management, partners and value chains actors.
  • Manage team of staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in agriculture, agricultural economics or related field from an accredited university is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ field experience in agricultural development, agribusiness, and/or trade working with staple crops
  • Experience working in Western Africa or other African regions with comparable markets
  • Knowledge of regional, cross-border and international trade procedures, policies and quality standard requirements for agriculture
  • Experience in promotion of financial products and services for staple crop trade and investment and rural agricultural markets
  • Fluency in English and proficiency in French required.
