Under the authority of the Director, DIR, and by delegation of authority from him/her as the case may be, the incumbent bears responsibility for the production of documentation for the Organization’s regional governing bodies and for supervising and coordinating all the operations of the Languages (LNG) section. He or she also edits English original material for sessions of those governing bodies and major conferences, and translates a wide variety of texts from French, German and Russian into English.

The incumbent is required to take full responsibility for the production of documentation for the Organization’s regional governing bodies and for supervising and coordinating all the operations of the Languages (LNG) section, as well as for all texts reviewed, revised, edited or translated, exercising judgment in deciding when to depart from a literal translation or to reformulate the original text. As a self-revising translator and reviser, the incumbent’s work is not subject to further review. Within the Organization, the incumbent maintains close daily contact with fellow members of the Languages, Library and Publication (LLP) team at regional level for consultation and exchange of views; consults text originators and administrative staff at all levels, when required, to elucidate technical issues and discuss time frames for production of specific documents; and maintains contact with counterparts at WHO headquarters to exchange experiences and ensure consistency of approaches. Outside the Organization, the incumbent consults and exchanges views with language staff in other organizations and in ministries (normally of health) in English-speaking countries. He/she maintains contact with freelance translators handling WHO translations, offering guidance and ensuring conformity with WHO translation standards.
