Brief description: The UK Department for International Development has a large and dynamic team of over 80 Social Development Advisers. We have current and anticipated social development vacancies in a range of country offices, particularly those in conflict-affected states and more difficult operating environments. Any UK vacancies are likely to be in our growing DFID office in Scotland.

Social Development Advisers (SDAs) ensure that the UK's development assistance delivers results with and for the people it is most intended to reach - the poorest, vulnerable and excluded, many of whom are girls and women. They ensure policies and programmatic choices are informed by the realities of poor people's lives and by an understanding of the social and political structures and processes that drive or constrain progress. SDAs provide innovative, practical solutions that enhance options and opportunities for poor women, men, girls and boys, driving transformational changes in their lives. Some roles are general Social Development Adviser roles, applying SD skills to an exciting range of sectors and programmes. We also need to fill roles requiring super-specialisms in gender, violence against girls and women and in research and evaluation.

Our advisers play a major role in: providing analysis and formulating strategy and policy, ensuring lasting change for the poorest and most vulnerable is measured and evaluated; providing social development advice across DFID priority areas including conflict prevention, climate change, and economic growth and private sector development; identifying, designing, commissioning and monitoring implementation and impact of social development projects, programmes and policies (see technical competency framework for detail); and establishing close and constructive relationships and networks with partners in country, regionally, or internationally. Leading, managing and developing teams of specialist advisers and programme staff and overseeing significant programme portfolios is key for nearly all A1 Senior Social Development Adviser jobs and some A2 level posts.

For any role, you must have experience in tackling persistent poverty and entrenched inequalities, in empowering poor people and enhancing accountability, all through both targeted approaches and by shaping macro and sector policy and programmes. You must be able to draw on evidence and demonstrate value for money. If you fit this bill, have a first degree and Masters degree level qualification in a relevant subject and overseas experience, we would be very interested to hear from you.

Relocation support may be available where successful candidates are required to move home to take up post.
