Position Responsibilities: 
Under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Legal Advisor shall be responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of ASLM. This may include but not limited to advising on: maintenance and institutionalization of ASLM’s legal and contractual infrastructure; organizational policy; document retention; filing and registration requirements; labor and immigration law; contracts; leases; partner agreements; and cross-border agreements and financial transactions. The Advisor will draft, review and help negotiate a wide range of grant, consulting, business and administrative agreements in connection with ASLM’s work, as well as ensure compliance with laws and regulations applicable to an international non-profit organization with headquarters and field offices.

Position Qualifications:
 
Minimum Education & Experience: The Legal Advisor should possess a Juris Doctor (JD), or equivalent degree, with a minimum seven (7) years of counsel experience, including some work in an international organization and/or location, such as a United Nations institution or similar. Fluency in the English language is required; French and/or Portuguese language skills are a plus. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiar with international legal policies and practices at the UN, development banks, or similar international nonprofit organizations; knowledge of Ethiopian and international law and practice is a plus;
  • As a trusted confidential adviser to senior leadership, the ability to control sensitive information and functions;
  • Entrepreneurial attitude and problem-solving skills to resolve legal questions in a manner that strengthens the foundation of the organization;
  • Experience in adapting to changing organizational cultures and legal regimes are helpful;
  • Strong computer skills.
