American Embassy in South Africa Consular Correspondence Clerk

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg is seeking an individual for the position of Consular Correspondence Clerk in the Consular Section.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications Required: NOTE: ALL APPLICANTS MUST ADDRESS EACH SELECTION CRITERION DETAILED BELOW WITH SPECIFIC AND COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SUPPORTING EACH ITEM.
Items 1- 6 are ALL REQUIRED
1. Education: Completion of secondary school (Grade 12) is required.
2. Experience: Minimum of two years experience in office work, other related work in the consular field or similar work involving the application of relatively complex regulatory or legal material is required.
3. Language:
- Level IV English - fluent in reading/writing/speaking is required.
- Level III (good working knowledge in writing, reading and speaking) in another South African language is required.
4. Knowledge:
- Must have a detailed knowledge of SA immigration laws, visa requirements and regulations on local operating procedures.
5. Skills and Abilities:
- Must have excellent phone etiquette.
- Must have patience, tact, and discretion in dealing with the public.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and English writing skills.
- Must be able to adhere to high ethical standards.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite 2007. (This will be tested)

Job Specification

Basic Function of Position:

The incumbent serves as one of three Consular Correspondence Unit staff. As a Consular Correspondence Clerk, the incumbent must provide the highest level of accurate, efficient and courteous service to customers by phone, mail, fax and web-based media. The incumbent is responsible for responding to all public inquiries and preparing public information material under the supervision of the unit supervisor. The incumbent is also one of the three Consular Cashiers responsible for accepting Consular and Department of Homeland Security fees. The incumbent must be able to provide American Citizen Services, Immigrant and Non-immigration visa services. The incumbent must be able to provide greeter services in the absence of the contractor.

Basic Salary Range: R129,233 - R180,922 per annum
Cash Benefits Range: R22,383 - R26,691 per annum
Non-cash benefits include medical, pension and others where applicable
