The Network Strategy and Innovation team is responsible for formulation, evolution and implementation of the American Express Network Payment Infrastructure strategy.
The Director role is responsible for (1) developing and executing against long-term Network strategy (2) performing strategy assessments/reports on GNS capabilities against the global business/payment system environment (3) collaborating with and influencing colleagues across American Express to support capability and project delivery.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with VP Strategy & Planning and Director colleagues, drive the annual investment planning process across NSB
  • Deliver annual Voice of the Customer Forums and Partner meetings
  • Act as EMEA regional advisor & contact point for all capabilities, products & value propositions enabled by the technical and operational Network
  • Analyze markets and support technology/business strategy for growth and development. Align strategy with GNS EMEA regional business leaders and their issuing & acquiring partners
  • Identify and define business needs associated with impacts and improvements to Network capabilities, processes, value propositions, and deal constructs
  • Produce business facing product guides for Network products and capabilities
  • Represent American Express Network principles in blue box product/capability development

  • Strategic planning skills demonstrated through proven results in bankcard networks through either a consulting role or working directly for a network
  • Proven flexibility and adaptability in effectively driving results in an environment of changing priorities
  • Knowledge of global payment networks, business practices, challenges, and trends in payment processing industry across regions (for example, knowledge of differences between regions in terms of legal framework, available technology, competitive landscape, markets, customer needs and expectations, etc.)
  • Knowledge of technological practices, challenges, and trends in the payment processing industry
  • Knowledge of pricing principles and strategies for products or services in a Network setting
  • Understanding of transaction processing messages (for example, what they mean, the path they take through the network)
  • Knowledge of emerging payments capabilities
  • Ability to construct business cases including CBA preparation
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Ability to operate at detailed and conceptual level
  •  Ability to work effectively in structured and unstructured contexts
  •  Ability to build strong working relationships with regional partners/customers and influence decisions without direct authority
  • Experience leading cross functional project teams across geographies & time zones
