Human Rights Watch DIRECTOR, NEW YORK COMMITTEE

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Director of the New York Committee. This position reports to the Deputy Director of North America in the Development and Outreach Department.

Responsibilities:

1. Build financial support for HRW by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from donors in the tri-state area;

2. Direct the 60 Member New York Committee and work closely with the Committee’s leadership;

3. Supervise the NY Associate Director and Manager and work closely with the Deputy Director and leadership gifts team to create a team approach to fundraising and donor management.

4. Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new prospects, existing donors and New York Committee members;

5. Plan and oversee the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in the New York area including HRW’s Annual Voices for Justice Dinner and the HRW Film Festival Benefit;

6. Collaborate with HRW’s Fundraising team across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia and help direct special development initiatives such as the Council Summit;

7. Manage the New York Executive Committee and the committees initiatives on fundraising, advocacy, outreach, and membership;

8. Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;

9. Work with the New York team to create and track donor lists, fundraising and expenses;

10. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development department;

11. Ensure organization-wide coordination and complementarity as well as maintain good working relationships with external partners; and

12. Perform other tasks as may be required.

Managerial Responsibilities:

1. Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;

2. Operate in compliance with organizational regulations and rules, including the policies of applicable employee agreements;

3. Establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively. Provide oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignments. Ensure that the workload of the staff is manageable and the reporting lines are clear;

4. Manage and guide staff by listening, having two-way communication, sharing pertinent information, responding appropriately and delegating appropriate responsibilities;

5. Provide appropriate and timely feedback on staff performance and provide guidance, coaching and training, as necessary. Provide guidance and coaching to staff in the supervisory positions; and

6. Foresee risks and allow for contingencies when planning; monitor and adjust plans and actions, as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable.

Experience: Minimum seven years of fundraising experience is required. Minimum three years of management experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Significant fundraising experience, with proven success in managing major gifts program is required.

2. Experience managing high-level donor relationships is required.

3. Ability to present the work of HRW and human rights issues to donors and potential donors is required.

4. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required.

5. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with donors and other partners.

6. Good judgment and superb diplomatic, analytical and strategic-thinking capabilities are required.

7. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work under pressure are required.

8. Raiser’s Edge experience is a plus
