ILRI research assistant IV – animal breeder/geneticist animal health and genetics (Biotechnology)

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

The position: CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish (CRP) seeks to sustainably increase productivity of small-scale livestock and fish systems to increase availability and affordability of meat, milk and fish for poor consumers and in doing so, to reduce poverty through greater participation by the poor along animal-source food value chains. The CRP is organized as nine Components of research focus, clustered into three Themes, one of which is livestock and fish genetics. The research is based on 8 value chains, of which the Ethiopia’s small ruminant is one, and the Research Assistant IV – Animal Breeder/Geneticist position being sought will make contributions to the genetics and breeding component of the livestock and fish research program in the Ethiopian Small Ruminant Value Chain.

Main Duties:

  • Supports the Ethiopian Small ruminant value chain, focusing on the breeding and related organizational and institutional framework constraints assessments, identification of opportunities
  • Provides short term breeding interventions for the small ruminant at community level and in other breeding program in which ILRI is locally involved
  • Assists in the field-surveys collection verification of data relevant to livestock production systems and breeding strategies
  • Undertakes preliminary analysis of the data and associated report writing
  • Participates in related feedback activities to ensure that the research outputs are disseminated to project partners and other stakeholders, especially farmers
  • Supervises field enumerators, and supports graduate fellows and breeding strategies research team members on the related research components
  • Contributes to additional tasks and projects, as required

Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications and experience:

  • MSc in Animal Breeding and Genetics

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience.

Training:

  • The incumbent will be expected and supported to broaden his/her skill base within the fields of quantitative genetics (animal breeding) and statistical analysis. To this end, self-motivation and self-learning skills will be vital.

Skills:

  • Strong capabilities in quantitative analysis, with demonstrated experience in non-parametric and mixed model methodologies
  • Strong competency in at least one statistical package, such as SAS or GenStat
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize, interpret and communicate research results in the form of reports or scientific publications, in English.

Desirable:

  • Good knowledge of the goat and sheep production and marketing systems in Ethiopia and in the Eastern Africa regions.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Competency in computer programming
  • Experience with the use of ASREML

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, but may on occasional travel to field sites outside of Addis Ababa.

Grade: 2D level 3.

Minimum Base Salary: Birr 13,388

Terms of appointment: This is Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Addis Ababa campus. Initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.

The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
