Nutrition Specialist Plan International Burkina Faso

About the role

In response to the current risks, challenges and future opportunities for Plan’s food assistance programs, Plan is setting up a new international Food Assistance and Nutrition Unit (FANU) with global reach. FANU will be located in the Plan Burkina Faso Office. This Unit will be responsible for strengthening the quality of food assistance programs and nutrition that target and impact effectively on children as well as supporting the organisation to expand its current program portfolio. The post holder reporting as part of a team to the Manager FANU will help to implement the FANU 18 month Plan. This period is expected to enable Plan to improve the quality of its food and nutrition assistance programs and increase influence of Plan within the food assistance and nutrition sectors.
The post-holder will bring a technical specialism into the team advising in particular on nutrition and effective related program responses that impact on children.

Dimensions of Role:
• The position has no direct reports but may on occasion be responsible for the coordination of specialist nutrition organisations and consultants supporting Plan’s food and nutrition programs.
• Provide clear and unequivocal advice based on experience of effective strategy and implementation to impact on child nutrition in emergencies
• Establish and chair a Plan Emergency Nutrition Network
• Represent Plan at global nutrition cluster meetings.
• Support countries for emergency response and strengthen the nutrition aspects.
• Regular reports to the Manager FANU on nutrition elements of all Plan F&N responses and opportunities
• Regular travel and deployment (sometimes up to 6 months) to emergency response programmes

Main Responsibilities

Plan’s nutrition assistance programs are of high quality and are regularly evaluated
• Establish quality standards and guidance for food assistance programs that impact on children
• Develop standardized participatory monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for nutrition work.
• Coordinate the provision of high quality programmatic expertise in nutrition and nutrition programs
• Prepare procedures for engagement on WFP programs between Country Offices (COs) and National Offices (NOs)
• Support Country Offices to design new food assistance and nutrition projects
• Identify and engage with key nutrition stakeholders in Plan worldwide and West Africa and East and Southern Africa offices as a priority.
• Work in coalitions toward the harmonisation of national policies related to nutrition
• Capitalize the learning and lessons learnt from program implementation in countries and dissemination.
Global nutrition advocacy initiatives are based on evidence of Plan’s food assistance experience
• Plans Nutrition network meeting regularly, reporting and articulating key messages to the organisation
• Coordinate and disseminate evidence-based research on the linkage between children right and nutrition in emergency settings
• Prepare nutrition and children position papers and policy briefs.
• Lead Plan’s representation in international forums.

About you

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours required to achieve roles objectives;

• Professional International Development/Emergency Management/Nutrition qualification
• Knowledge of the food assistance and nutrition sector including WFP, USAID and ECHO food assistance programming
• Knowledge of the Africa Union an advantage
• Extensive knowledge of nutrition issues in Africa
• Knowledge of international humanitarian standards and codes of conduct

Languages

Excellent written and spoken English required. French would also be advantageous.

Location and Travel
• The position is based in a small office environment in Plan’s Burkina Faso office
• It requires extensive travel to Country and Regional Offices, International Headquarters and for donor and cluster meetings which may account for up to 50% or above of working time
• Program Unit visits may be to emergency settings which are remote, provide rudimentary facilities or be physically and emotionally challenging in other ways

Type of Role: Three year fixed term contract
Reports to: Manager, Food Assistance & Nutrition Unit
Salary: $40-50,000 per annum plus full expat benefits
