Organizational Setting

The Division of Public Information is one of the six Divisions in the Department of Management. The Division of Public Information (MTPI) has two Sections: the News and Information Section and the Media and Outreach Section, in which this post is located. The aim of the Media and Outreach Section is to generate news stories that positively highlight IAEA activities and at the same time increase knowledge and understanding of nuclear issues, including the various applications.

Main purpose

The Press and Public Information Officer develops and coordinates multifaceted communication campaigns with a special emphasis on issues and events which highlight the significant contribution of the IAEA in ensuring universal access to the benefits of nuclear energy in a safe and secure environment. The incumbent also helps, when required, meet the daily and often unexpected demands of the media, seeking internal guidance on inquiries and responding, arranging interviews and accompanying visiting journalists. In addition, he/she is MTPI's main focal point for organizing in-house briefings requested by Member States, international organizations and NGOs.

Role

The Press and Public Information Officer is: (1) a project manager, planning and coordinating strategic communication projects and briefings; (2) a media expert, working with journalists and expanding relevant media contacts to raise awareness of IAEA's contribution to peaceful use of nuclear technology; (3) a producer of written and other materials for dissemination through the internet, traditional media and social media.

Partnerships

The Press and Public Information Officer interacts closely with the IAEA's Departments, serving as a key focal point within the Division of Public Information for communication campaigns. He/she consults with IAEA staff at all levels to obtain clear guidance, check facts and matters of policy and to request assistance from specialists in order to prepare materials and provide information for journalists. He/she also works as appropriate with other international organizations to ensure alignment with the IAEA's goals for communication campaigns.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Interact with journalists and expand media contacts to increase global awareness and media coverage of the IAEA's activities, and of its role in increasing access to nuclear technology while improving the safety and security of nuclear facilities.
  • Devise and implement communication campaigns, working with external consultants or agencies if appropriate, to help raise the profile of events which highlight the significant contribution of the IAEA.
  • Coordinate and contribute material to a wide variety of multimedia packages, as well as web and print products for use in communication campaigns.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Broad understanding of the IAEA's mandate, of its operations, and of nuclear issues in general.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage a major media and public outreach campaign and contribute creative input.
  • Good understanding of traditional and new media and how best to meet their needs in order to deliver the IAEA's message most efficiently.
  • Ability to generate professional multimedia, web and print communications products, including materials aimed at media use.
  • Ability to work in teams and win the confidence of senior IAEA staff.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • University degree in communication/journalism, international relations, political sciences or an appropriate scientific subject.
  • Minimum of five years practical working experience in journalism or media relations/public information, preferably in an international context.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and/or organizing public events.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing experience.
  • Experience in reporting global and nuclear issues, preferably for multicultural audiences.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Working knowledge of other IAEA official languages (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) an advantage.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $56 091 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $27 260*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
