Health Physicist

The Radiation Protection Department (RPD) at SLAC is responsible for providing oversight for the safe operation of all radiological work at SLAC and performs radiation safety analysis and design, including shielding calculations for beam lines, experiments and facilities. The mission of RPD also includes but is not limited to: managing the SLAC Radiological Protection Program and, radiological environmental protection program, and management of radioactive materials, sources and low-level and mixed radioactive waste. RPD Health Physicists identify potential sources of ionizing radiation for existing and new experiments and projects and define radiation protection measures to minimize the exposure to personnel and the impact to the environment.
We’re seeking a Health Physicist to provide radiological support for SLAC accelerator and user operations and maintenance to satisfy 10CFR835 and SLAC requirements.  The successful candidate will also manage and implement the SLAC radiation instrumentation programs. As assigned by the supervisor, he/she will provide assistance to meet the objectives and mission of the RPD and ES&H Division, as well as provide technical and operational support to the SLAC radiological activities (e.g., facility D&D). He/she will implement ES&H and RP business plans within the areas of responsibility.  In addition, the successful candidate will develop and maintain the knowledge and capabilities to evaluate and control radiological impacts from accelerator operations.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Provide radiological support for LCLS, FACET and ESA research, operational and user programs
  • Serve as the RPD instrumentation program manager for portable, fixed and movable instrumentation programs and support of the instrumentation needs for SLAC projects such as the PEP-II material release and radioactive waste disposal.
  • The above support includes frequent verbal and written communication with customers and stakeholders, development of program manuals, technical basis documents, and operating procedures, lead/participate in program assessments, and provide training.
  • The job involves occasionally working extended or off-hours to meet objectives.
Note: This position is a dual posting at the 3P3 and 3P4 levels.  If the successful candidate has sufficient expertise to perform the full range of responsibilities independently, hire at the 3P4 level.
  
Qualifications:• BS or MS degree in health physics, radiation physics, or nuclear engineering with a minimum of 2 years of professional health physics experience
• In-depth knowledge of health and/or radiation physics
• Excellent writing and verbal communication and coordination skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
• Demonstrated organization and coordination skills
Desired Skills:• Strong health and/or radiation physics background
• Knowledge of radiological environmental protection
• Knowledge of facility dismantling, decommissioning and clean-up
• Knowledge of instrumentation program
• Experience of Radio-analysis Lab operations
• Experience and skill of program/project management and execution
• Demonstrated Supervisory experience
