Mechanical Engineer

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is searching for a talented Mechanical Engineer to develop and grow in a unique and exciting environment.  LCLS is the world's first x-ray free electron laser (FEL) with unprecedented capabilities in photon energy range, peak power and pulse lengths. There are six independent instruments currently in development or operation that are specifically designed to utilize the exceptional beam characteristics of the LCLS to probe the structure and dynamics of matter at atomic size and timescales.  The evolution of science and experimental techniques on these instruments along with upgrades in the x-ray FEL source will continue to challenge design methods and materials.

The Mechanical Engineer will report to a Group Leader in the LCLS Engineering Department and serve as a source of engineering and design support for a variety of instrumentation projects.  In this position, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing, documenting, and coordinating the fabrication, procurement, and assembly of components for the adaptation and integration of new user experiments and upgrades.  Additional responsibilities include interacting with a diverse group of scientists, professional and technical staff members to create engineering specifications, schedules, budgets, and resource plans and to then manage projects within these constraints.  The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for keeping management informed of scope changes, critical project needs as well as schedule and budget variations.

Qualifications:BS in Engineering or related field and at least five years of relevant experience in the following areas:
• Design of ultra-high vacuum systems, opto-mechanical systems, precision mechanisms, kinematic supports, and complex X-ray instrumentation
• Comprehensive heat transfer and thermal stress analysis, structural and vacuum system analysis, and the application of analytical and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods to these areas
• Developing detailed engineering specifications and procedures
• Designing with CAD tools and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
• Manufacturing and production coordination
Additional qualifications include excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong analytical and problem solving capabilities that utilize creative and innovative thinking.
Desired Skills:An advanced degree as well as experience with R&D, and project management.

Please Note:  The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory values diversity and is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. SLAC confirms employment authorization for all new hires through the E-Verify Program.
