DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the overall guidance of the Director, FOM and the supervision of the UN-REDD Programme Coordinator, the incumbent will support REDD+ country programmes implementation related to forest monitoring in countries in Latin America. The duty station will be one of the LAC countries.
In particular, the incumbent will:
• collaborate with country teams and FAO country offices to support work-planning and implementation of country programmes;
• provide technical guidance on forest monitoring and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) components in REDD+ country programmes;
• facilitate interaction and communication between country programme stakeholders and expertise on forest monitoring topics to ensure knowledge exchange;
• facilitate institutional and individual capacity building on forest monitoring in the programme countries;
• monitor progress of country programmes and identify needs for adjustments;
• coordinate and participate in backstopping and country missions related to implementation of forest monitoring and MRV components in REDD+ country programmes;
• support the development and implementation of Web-GIS portals and satellite forest monitoring of countries in Latin America in collaboration with the Remote Sensing group in the UN-REDD Team;
• perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
• University degree in forestry, environmental sciences, geomatics or related field
• Three years of relevant experience related to forest monitoring and remote sensing, including international experience and experience in LAC countries
• Working knowledge of English and Spanish
SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
• Level of knowledge of forest inventory and monitoring and the use of remote sensing, especially development and implementation of national forest monitoring systems in developing countries
• Extent and relevance of academic achievements in subjects relevant to forest inventory, forest monitoring, including remote sensing
• Understanding of climate change negotiations and REDD+
• Quality of both oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to deliver results within deadlines
• Knowledge of other official languages
Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
