Deputy CEO

The GAVI Alliance is seeking an experienced and energetic new Deputy CEO (DCEO). This role offers a rare opportunity to shape the leadership of a uniquely effective organisation in global public health and complement the leadership of the Chief Executive. The DCEO manages the business on a day-to-day basis and supports the CEO, Seth Berkley, in developing and implementing the organisation’s strategy. This person also has the stature and ability to represent GAVI with the full range of its partners. The DCEO will continue the development of GAVI as an alliance, providing a forum for technical, funding, and delivery partners to engage. The DCEO also has primary responsibility for providing direction to GAVI’s organisational development and ensuring that the mission and the core priorities of GAVI are delivered. The DCEO helps to promote a culture of respect and trust at all levels of the organisation. S/he also ensures effective internal communication and knowledge sharing.
This is a demanding role for a mature and talented professional. The successful candidate will combine leadership experience in complex international and matrixed organisations with suppleness of ego and attention to detail. S/he will bring strong relationship building skills, both internally and externally, and superb communication skills. This individual will have the capacity to work across disciplines and deal with ambiguity as the organisation evolves; s/he will also clearly demonstrate entrepreneurial flair and the ability to innovate. A focus on the translation of strategy into delivery will be critical as much of the role is focused on programmes. A real appreciation of the partnership model of global public health delivery and an understanding of the realities of working in resource constrained environments in the Global South will be vital. The role will involve significant travel.
GAVI attracts talented professionals from the public and private sectors to help us make a measurable and lasting impact on the lives of the world’s poorest people. Since 2001, GAVI has supported the immunisation of 440 million additional children who might otherwise not have had access to vaccines, and saved more than five six million lives.
GAVI is committed to diversity within its workforce and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
GAVI has retained Russell Reynolds Associates to support it in making this appointment. If you wish to apply, please send your cover letter and CV to gaviresponses@russellreynolds.com by 29 November, 2013 and mention “Deputy CEO” in the subject line of the email.
