Background / General description:
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group (WBG), provides investment and advisory services to promote the private sector in 187 developing countries, to create jobs and deliver services that improve living standards and create opportunity for people to escape poverty.

Agribusiness and Food Security is a key strategic priority for the World Bank Group, as reflected in the 2013 WBG Agriculture Action Plan, and the elaboration of IFC's role in supporting private investment in the agribusiness value chain in the 2012 Agribusiness Strategic Action Plan (ASAP). 

To support this agenda, the Global Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Department is seeking a Senior Economist with a specialization in Agricultural Economics, to lead the department's economic analysis in Agribusiness, and provide intellectual leadership in economic analysis in general as related to the broader mandate of the MAS industry group. The Senior Economist will be a key member of the Agribusiness team, including the Associate Director, Strategist, Industry Specialists, Sector Leads, Regional Industry Managers, and Investment Officers. S/he will work closely with the Strategy, Economics, Communications and Knowledge Management Unit, taking the lead role in Economic Analysis and working closely with other MAS Economists and Development Impact Analysts. The Senior Economist will be the primary liaison person with the World Bank on agriculture and rural development issues
Duties and Accountabilities:
• Contribute to sector knowledge in agribusiness through leading economic analysis. Monitor policy and market trend developments in key sub-sectors/products affecting agribusiness investment in emerging markets. 

• Provide project economic analysis, and contribute to sector/market analysis on agribusiness projects.

• Contribute to the development of Agribusiness strategy, sub-sector strategies, market/sector analysis, and other strategy and analytical documents.

• Lead efforts to articulate development impact in agribusiness through contributions to IDG and DOTS indicator definition and tracking; design and undertaking of periodic evaluations and studies. Manage the interface with the IFC Development Impact Department. 

• Liaise with WB counterparts and monitor research and other related analyses generated by the Bank, and related organizations (FAO, etc.)

• Contribute to the MAS Knowledge Management agenda through producing lessons of experience, moderation of practice group discussions, identification of outside experts for Knowledge events, etc.
Selection Criteria:
• Postgraduate degree in economics, PhD preferred, with a focus on agricultural economics and economic development. 

• At least 10 years of relevant work experience as an agricultural economist, preferably in the private sector. 

• Strong grasp of core economic and financial concepts, understanding of development issues and impact, familiarity with economic cost-benefit analysis.

• In depth knowledge of agricultural trade, sector polices, and commodity markets. 

• Ability to synthesize large volumes of information from diverse sources, to compile data, and prepare quantitative and qualitative management reports.

• Field experience and experience in decentralized environments would be an advantage.

• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, with demonstrated ability to lead and work in multidisciplinary teams.

• Excellent written and oral communications skills, in particular relating economic concepts and analysis to non-economists.

• Flexibility, responsiveness, and ability to manage multiple activities to tight deadline.
