Rio Tinto is a high-profile global company with a major international media presence.  It is dual listed in the UK and Australia and is in the top 10 of both the FTSE and the ASX by market capitalisation. Rio Tinto’s media and communications division is responsible for leading the strategy and implementation of the Group’s media, digital, employee communications, brand and marketing communications activities.  The purpose of the media & communications team is to protect and enhance Rio Tinto’s reputation through proactive communication and effective issues management, and by building mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders, employees, partners and communities.

Reporting to the Global Practice Leader Media Relations, you will work closely with senior leadership within the APAC region, as well as Government and investor relations groups and the broader product groups to coordinate and implement the media strategy in the region. Acting as the company spokesperson for critical issues, you will take a proactive role ensuring media and positioning statements adequately protect and promote Rio Tinto’s corporate reputation while maintaining robust working relationships with key media and other stakeholders to ensure communications are consistent and appropriate.

Key to your success will be the senior executive and Board level support you will provide, including training and coaching in interviews, announcements, conferences and press releases and relationship development, so we are seeking a seasoned media relations professional with experience leading media functions in large, listed organisations. Ideally, you will have developed networks at the highest levels of the business, and a demonstrated background in the strategic engagement with external media contacts. To complete the profile, you will be a natural communicator and have the credibility and gravitas to communicate and influence at all levels internal and external to an organisation.
