The Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution is accepting applications for a new Senior Fellow position established with the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Under the supervision of the Director of the Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE), the Robert Bosch Senior Fellow will explore a broad range of issues shaping Germany and the critical role it plays in Europe’s economic, political, and security future (both in terms of hard power and soft power). The Senior Fellow will play a key role in furthering CUSE’s mission as the leading U.S. forum for independent research and policy recommendations, high-level dialogue, and public debate on U.S.-European relations.
The Robert Bosch Senior Fellow will work to foster greater academic and policy consideration of America’s strategic partnership with Germany and other European allies. The Senior Fellow will manage the implementation of the Center’s research and outreach efforts on Germany and the future of Europe; including planning and organizing conferences, workshops, and briefings; and conducting media outreach and fundraising. The Senior Fellow will undertake his or her own research projects, produce journal articles and book-length monographs, lead issue-focused meetings, and interact with the national and international media through interviews and other press appearances. The Senior Fellow will also contribute to the Europe and Germany dimensions of other Brookings activities.
The Senior Fellow will be a well-known scholar holding an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in international relations, political science, public policy or a related field; and will have substantial expertise in the political and security affairs of Germany and Europe, and U.S. - European relations. The Senior Fellow will have at least ten years of experience in policy analysis, senior management, and activity planning, with a proven record of publishing books and articles in internationally-known professional or academic journals and news publications. (S)he must have demonstrated ability to conduct innovative research of the highest quality and impact, as well as the leadership capacity to undertake and oversee large-scale projects. Strong candidates will blend academic excellence with substantive management experience, and will have experience in policymaking in Germany, the United States, or Europe.
Applicants should have deep professional or academic experience in Germany, with professional-level spoken and written abilities in both English and German. The ideal candidate will be flexible, diplomatic, innovative, collegial, and adept at working in fast-paced environments. Strong candidates should have extensive contacts among the higher levels of the government, academic, and business communities in Germany and across Europe. The Senior Fellow must be comfortable working with high-ranking decision makers, senior government and diplomatic officials, current and potential funders, and Brookings senior management. Outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential.
