Communication Officer (Multimedia Database Expert)

1) Rationale and context of the assignment: The Digital Strategy Section is in need of a Communication Officer (Multimedia Database Expert) to manage UNICEF’s digital asset management (DAM) system, including photography, video, brand and publications and other high resolution media assets from DOC, other HQ Divisions and other offices; and to manage and catalogue the audio-visual library for UNICEF NYHQ.
2) Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Digital Strategy Section’s Sr. Photography Editor and Executive Producer, and in consultation with other multimedia asset managers and coordinators: A: Advise on and implement the appropriate workflow, procedures, practises and upgrades to maximize the profiling, efficiency and scope of UNICEF’s multimedia DAM system – www.weshare.unicef.org, also including www.photos.unicef.org and www.videos.unicef.org – for both administrative users of the system and for global end users throughout the organization, as well as for third party distributions; B: Advise on and coordinate the development and implementation of APIs (application programming interfaces) to facilitate the sharing of UNICEF’s multimedia content with internal and external web and mobile platforms; C: Advise on, implement and support solutions for high resolution media asset management to other parts of UNICEF, as needed; D: Advise on and support best practises for merging and updating taxonomies on UNICEF’s DAM, in line with www.unicef.org and other international UNICEF platforms, as needed; E: Facilitate the organization of UNICEF NYHQ digital audio-visual assets (and supporting documentation) on UNICEF’s DAM system in a timely manner, adding technical, descriptive and administrative metadata and packaging for distribution F: Fulfil audio-visual research requests and assist UNICEF video producers in locating footage for their pieces G: Maintain the UNICEF NYHQ film and tape collection
H: Support the timely production and updating of photography assets on the DAM, including new HQ image acquisitions, guidelines, features and related content; maintain the Photography Unit’s production and storage LAN (Local Area Network) including advising on upgrades and capacity in line with related industry technology developments; Advise on other photo-related digital equipment and softwares including cameras and related peripherals, image management tools, etc.
3) Deliverables, Delivery dates, Costs and Timeframe, Details of how the work must be delivered:
Deliverables Specific tasks will be measured against the timely implementation of the above.
4) Reports to: DOC Digital Strategy Sr. Photography Editor and Executive Producer.
5) Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required: • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in, coordinating multimedia DAM systems including web, database, API, equipment, taxonomy and related components;
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with non-DAM photography-specific equipment, softwares and related technical components; • Knowledge of the Orange Logic DAM system an asset; • Knowledge of international documentary media standards and practices an asset. • Experience organising and maintaining libraries and archives, particularly audio-visual materials • Knowledge of library science and cataloguing standards • Excellent organisational skills • Relevant minimum education/professional experience requirements.
