Supervises: All WWF staff working for the Ecuador Program Office

I. Major Function

Provides vision and leadership for the WWF program in Ecuador and effective high-level representation of WWF with key audiences to build strength and support for the program.

Directs, manages and takes responsibility for all activities of WWF in country to ensure that the conservation, policy, communication, financial and fundraising activities of the Program Office add up to a unified effort which contributes to WWF´s global goals and accomplishes WWF's objectives in Ecuador.

Serves as Legal Representative and ensures that all operating rules and systems are adequate and that the WWF Ecuador Program's legal and reporting requirements are met and are in line with WWF's policies, procedures and standards. 

II. Major Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Provides leadership to ensure the development, financing and implementation of WWF's conservation programs in Ecuador and ensures that WWF-US Board and, as appropriate, WWF-International Board approved policies, procedures and standards for operational, financial, personnel and administrative systems and outputs are implemented in the Ecuador Program.
  2. Leads the development and implementation of a well-structured country strategy and high-powered team articulated with regional initiatives (e.g. tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean) and aligned with WWF global priorities.
  3. Establishes and oversees a monitoring and evaluation system to measure the performance of the WWF program in Ecuador including its contribution to WWF Global Initiatives.
  4. Ensures, according to agreed standards, timely technical, financial and communications reporting from all parts of WWF Ecuador Program on accomplishments in achieving objectives, to the WWF Network and donors.
  5. Manages and co-ordinates the smooth running of technical advisory groups, regional teams and other work groups (e.g. country/regional teams) which may be deemed necessary to provide advice and support to WWF Program in Ecuador.
  6. Oversees the development and implementation of a Communications Strategy for the Ecuador Program to position WWF Ecuador on a national level, within the network and also help influence decision-making processes.
  7. Leads key fundraising approaches to National Organizations, Government Aid Agencies, foundations and corporate, and private donors within the policies, procedures and standards set by WWF-US and, as appropriate, the WWF-International Board and in close liaison with the Regional Director from Northern Amazon/Chocó Darién Program.
  8. Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with appropriate individuals and relevant local, national, regional, and international conservation and development entities regarding WWF positions and general information exchange related to the WWF Ecuador Program.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.
III. Working Relationships
  1. Internal: Interacts with WWF staff on a daily basis, and with members of relevant technical advisory groups, regional teams and other relevant groupings. Proactively co-ordinates and interacts with WWF-US and other Network staff.
  2. External: Interacts with in-country governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, media, and donors in Ecuador and on behalf of WWF Ecuador. Interact with entities outside of Ecuador in coordination with the Regional Director from Northern Amazon/Chocó Darién Program and/or other relevant network colleagues.
IV. Supervisory Responsibility
Responsible for the selection, training, deployment, supervision, and evaluation of all WWF staff working for the Ecuador Program Office.

V. Minimum Requirements
1. Education/Experience:
  • An advanced degree in conservation, natural sciences, economics, management, international development, or a related field and at least 10 years of experience; of which 3-5 years should be in the region, with demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in both English and Spanish
  • Verified success in fundraising and program development and administration
2. Skills and Abilities
  • Technical proficiency in the field of conservation, natural-resource management or international development.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent capacity to manage human and financial resources,
  • Strong skills in project planning, financing, implementation and evaluation.
  • Ability to work effectively with local communities and governments.
