Fundraiser

IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative helps to accelerate and upscale sustainable practices within mainstream international commodity markets, driving sustainability from niche to norm. We build ambitious public-private coalitions of companies, civil society organizations and governments in high-impact programs in order to benefit people, the planet and profit.
Partnering with over 350 companies, 60 NGOs and numerous governmental organizations, IDH is a dynamic organization of about 45 staff members based in Utrecht, The Netherlands, with hubs in Vietnam, Indonesia and other countries. In the last year IDH has expanded its activities and now runs around 100 projects through 18 commodity programs in 50 countries, together with internationally operating companies and implementing partners. Among the commodities IDH focuses on are cocoa, tea, soy, cotton, timber, natural stone, aquaculture and electronics, with new sector programs in development. Partnering companies have committed to invest in their supply chains to make production and trade more sustainable. IDH receives its funding from Dutch, Swiss and Danish development aid.

Purpose and scope of the Job
The position of a dedicated Fundraiser is new within IDH. He/she will focus on the identification and acquisition of funds and the drafting and submission of grant proposals. The intention of acquiring these new funds is to co-finance and implement significant regional programs in Africa and other high growth areas of the developing world. IDH receives its core funding from several European donor organizations, and is seeking supplementary funding for the expansion and implementation of its programs on regional and local levels. Through sourcing from regional public and private funds, the IDH programs can be more quickly brought to scale.
The Fundraiser is part of the IDH’s International Public Affairs Team, which includes the Director of International Public Affairs and a Senior Advisor Partnerships.  He/she will report to the Director of International Public Affairs and will work closely with IDH Program Directors and Managers at both central and regional level.
The candidate should be willing and able to travel extensively internationally.
It is in principle a permanent position, starting with a one year contract.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead in fundraising for IDH on a program level.
  • Identify and assess funding opportunities and liaise with (prospective) funding agencies with the aim of securing funding for IDH’s programs, esp. at the regional and country level.
  • Draft and submit funding proposals in close cooperation with Program Managers and Program Directors.
  • Engage with potential funding agencies, seeing through of funding requests and account management
Requirements
  • Holds a university degree, preferably in international finance, marketing, international relations, communications or a related field.
  • At least three to five years experience and a proven track record in funding acquisition at regional and country level from bilateral aid agencies,  the EU, foundations and or other relevant funders.
  • Operational focus - able to execute a complete fundraising cycle, e.g. market research, application writing and budgeting, donor relationship management and monitoring.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, diplomatic nature.
  • Ability to draft tailored proposals to meet the requirements  of funding agencies.
  • Self-propelled, and independent,  also a good team player.
  • Pro-active, sees and seeks opportunities, entrepreneurial, result-oriented.
  • Fluent spoken and written in English. French and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
