Senior Lecturer / Reader in Quantitative Methods / Social Statistics

University of Bristol -Faculty of Social Sciences and Law

Ref: ACAD100622
Salary of £47,314 - £53,233
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Bristol is committed to a substantial expansion of its capacity in quantitative social sciences and is launching an international search for five members of academic staff.
The Professor and Reader/Senior Lecturer posts are in any field of social sciences and on appointment will be placed in the most appropriate School of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law according to the appointee’s expertise and experience. These posts will be attached to the Centre for Multilevel Modelling. We are seeking internationally outstanding applicants with strong leadership and collaborative experience, an extensive track record of high quality, large-scale grant-funded research, and highly-ranked scholarly publications. We are particularly looking for candidates with expertise in multilevel modelling or other advanced quantitative methods development used in the social sciences such as structural equation modelling, Bayesian modelling or spatial modelling. Both posts will be involved in teaching and supervision especially as part of the Advanced Quantitative Methods Pathway of the South West Doctoral Training Centre.
The three Senior Lecturer/Lecturer posts are to support Bristol’s new Q-Step centre, one of fifteen such centres funded across the UK by the Nuffield Foundation, ESRC and HEFCE, with a remit to promote a step-change in the quality of quantitative methods teaching and learning for undergraduate social science students (see http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/q-step). Under this initiative we are seeking to appoint three new academic staff, two in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies (SPAIS), and one in the School for Policy Studies (SPS). A pre-requisite for any applicant is a passion for using quantitative data to explore and answer research questions in the social sciences, and the ability to nurture a similar excitement in undergraduate and postgraduate students. Applicants can have research interests in any area relevant to the Schools’ existing research programmes.
All appointees will join the newly formed Collaborative Network for Quantitative Social Science at Bristol within which they will be encouraged to pursue cross-disciplinary research projects. We would also be interested in applications from researchers who wish to conduct innovative social science research using the world leading Bristol birth cohort study Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), known popularly as "Children of the 90s”.
The proposed start dates are between April and August 2014. To discuss any of these roles, please see the additional information in the further particulars.
The University of Bristol is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students.
