Process Safety Specialist

Sasol North America has an opening for a Process Safety Specialist.  This position reports through the SHERQ Department within US Mega Projects and will reside in Houston, TX.  Below is the scope and details of the position requirements:

The incumbent will be responsible for the development and establishment of an internally aligned process safety program and standards to ensure regulatory and site requirements are met. Furthermore, this position is responsible to lead project activities to ensure that they conform to the requirements and to give guidance to these contractors on safety performance improvement.  

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Trade Organizations outside the Company to further the Company’s interests.
  • Understand how safety and environmental trends and directions will affect the strategic plans of the Businesses Units.
  • Develop and implement areas of safety and environmental compliance.
  • Interacts with various levels in the Business Unit operations and support groups teams, maintenance, engineering and other plant personnel.
  • Acts as the expert in the area of process safety management.
  • Develop, implement and manage compliance strategies.
  • Apply safety regulatory knowledge and experience to develop effective strategies and solutions to the current and future technical and regulatory issues facing the Company.
  • Develop training, interface with Training Department and train personnel.
  • Provides necessary services to Business Units to provide support in regulatory compliance.
  • Support major projects by taking a leadership role in process safety to ensure that process safety concerns relating to the full life cycle of the project have been identified, understood, and managed.
  • Support the design teams by determining appropriate hazard and risk management studies required, defining study requirements and scope, providing oversight of the studies, and working with the teams to integrate the study results into the facility design.
  • Provide technical guidance on appropriate designs and systems to prevent, control and mitigate risks.
  • Participate in risk reviews such as LOPAs, HAZIDs, HAZOPs and PHAs to ensure they are effective and conform to Company’s requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong health, safety, environmental and regulatory compliance record with an understanding and commitment to safety and environmental requirements.
  • Provide process safety training, coaching and development for leadership, peers and contractors.
  • Advise projects on the use of appropriate technical standards, practices, and design guidelines and evaluate requests for deviations from these.
  • Interpret Process Safety requirements across projects.
  • Provide engineering support as the process safety discipline lead in development and technical endorsement of MOC proposals, while understanding how to arrive at the appropriate balance between safety, production efficiency, and cost in assessing MOC proposals.

Experience and/or Educational Requirements:

  • Safety Science or Engineering degree
  • Minimum 10 years of safety and environmental experience
  • CSP or CIH designation is desirable
  • in Process Safety matters
  • Knowledgeable in Process Safety matters, e.g. OSHA, API, ANSI, NFPA, IEC 61508, IEC 61511 / ISA 84, and IEC 62061A regulations and standards
  • Proven, practical on-site experience of the implementation of safety and environmental practices in a construction environment
