Unit Manager: Cogeneration

Sasol North America has an opening for a Unit Manager: Cogeneration. This position reports to the Operations Manager: GTL and will reside in the Greater Houston, TX area but will transfer to Lake Charles, LA within 24 months.  Below is the scope and some details of the position requirements:

  • Manages the production aspects of a multi-billion dollar capital project. Primarily, this position is accountable for participating in a highly functional and matrix-based organizational structure.
  • The new plants will represent new technology; thus, this position is responsible for understanding the technological challenges and facilitating input to the IPMT regarding the operational issues surrounding each technology. This Unit Manager is responsible for technologies and interfacing with the technology providers as follows:
    • Gas turbines
    • Steam& Power production
    • Steam turbine
    • Fuels gas collections and distribution
  • The team is responsible for successful execution, commissioning, and start-up of multiple plants while working in a project environment utilizing a shared resource framework.
  •  Accountable for developing an effective team, which provides clear direction and input to the Integrated Project Management Team (IPMT) regarding production concerns.
  • Works closely with the Operations Manager: GTL and Operations Manager: Lake Charles to integrate the new operation into the existing plant site.
  • The planning horizon for this position is the same as the business case, 20 years. This position is tasked with the establishment of a new plant with all the operational concerns that are included. Therefore, the plant must be able to meet the business case and hence all decisions have a 20 year impact. This position accepts a high amount of risk in the establishment of a new plant.

Position Requirements:

  • Leads all aspects of safety, health and environmental programs relating to the operations to ensure full consideration of all applicable environmental and safety regulations is integrated into the project design.
  • Collaborate with production colleagues to establish the Operating and Maintenance philosophy for the project, remaining consistent with the existing operations.
  • Leads the development of robust commissioning plans.
  • Ensures programs, procedures and activities within area of responsibility comply with corporate governance and legal compliance requirements.
  • Provides appropriate operations input during project phase into facility designs and project execution philosophies to ensure all required preparations are implemented for successful facility start-up.
  • Leads in the recruitment and training of operations staff (production), ensuring staff is adequately prepared to assume full responsibility at handover from the EPC contractor.
  • Closely collaborates with relevant centralized organizations while participating in the recruitment and training of maintenance, analytical service and SHE staff.
  • Directs the design and implementation of all production and maintenance related systems, policies and procedures and the integration thereof with the required management information systems.
  • Establishes the overall operations objectives and budgets (Fixed and Variable costs) to enable safe and profitable operations of the plant post start-up.
  • Ensures that the operations functions of the plant are conducted and established in a manner compatible with and ready to be integrated into the existing Lake Charles operations.

Experience and/or Educational Requirements:

  • University/Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent;
  • Chemical Engineering degree preferred
  • 15-20 plus years of direct relative experience in Energy  Industry;  7 plus years of managerial experience preferred
  • Project Execution experience is a plus
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Management style must include values driven leadership, cultural sensitive, business acumen, team focused, networking and relation building ability, and balanced conceptual and practical.
