The Global Development Network (GDN) is a public International Organization that builds research capacity in development globally. GDN supports researchers in developing and transition countries to generate and share high quality applied social science research to inform policymaking and advance social and economic development. Founded in 1999, GDN is headquartered in New Delhi, with offices in Cairo and Washington DC.
GDN is seeking an outstanding scholar to join the Organization as Senior Economist. The person to be appointed will be based at our Headquarters in New Delhi. We offer a competitive compensation package.

Duties and Responsibilities
The person to be appointed will report directly to the President of GDN. Duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:  
  • Providing intellectual leadership in the identification of new research areas for GDN and its partners.
  • Advise the program management team in terms of the research content of GDN activities: conception and research content of new research programs (including on inclusive growth, food security, and how markets work for the poor); definition of appropriate methodologies;  organization of capacity building components and quality control.
  • Participate in fundraising and donor-related activities.
  • Take part in the implementation of GDN programs, notably through the drafting of calls for proposals, the reviewing of submissions, the conceptualizing and conducting of training workshops, the organization of mentoring services for teams of developing country researchers.
  • Provide support for GDN’s Annual Conferences and other high-profile events (incl. the GDN Global Policy Dialogues) – assist with pre-conference planning, program development, networking and summarizing key messages.
  • Contribute to policy outreach and the dissemination of GDN research outputs: participate in various policy workshops, contribute to the synthesis and publication of research conducted by GDN and its grantees, oversee the GDN Working Paper Series and explore the feasibility of launching a moderated blog.
  • Liaise with other units (e.g. M&E, knowledge management and networking services, Communications) as appropriate.
  • Miscellaneous tasks as requested by the President, as necessary to accomplish the goals of GDN. 


Selection Criteria
  • PhD or equivalent and a strong record of publication in a relevant field with ten years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in and experience in the practice of qualitative and quantitative research methods and approaches
  • A strong record of professional publications
  • Experience in refereeing papers and other research products
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant development research and ability to draw on it for GDN’s capacity building activities and project design
  • Strong interest in developing the use of academic research to inform policy making and in stimulating uptake of research results by potential research users, including policy-makers.
  • Wide professional affiliations and research networks
  • Excellent knowledge of oral and written communication skills in English
  • Willingness and ability to work as part of a closely integrated team with diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work under multicultural environment and able to work under tight deadlines.
